Harpak-ULMA introduces ARTIC SS Chevron for medical packaging, expands fresh food solutions

USA – Harpak-ULMA has unveiled the ARTIC SS Chevron, a horizontal flow wrap machine designed for medical and pharmaceutical packaging.

The system is engineered to optimize film usage while ensuring sterility, accessibility, and efficiency in packaging.

It caters to medical device manufacturers who must balance cost control with stringent packaging and product safety requirements.

One key advantage of the ARTIC SS Chevron is its ability to operate without premade bags. This provides a cost-effective alternative that gives producers greater control over their packaging processes.

The machine is particularly suited for low-profile medical products, such as bandages and wound care items.

Its quick-changeover design, featuring a simple wheel adjustment, reduces downtime and enhances productivity.

Additionally, the single-film format lowers material inventory requirements and cuts validation costs—an essential factor in medical packaging, where validation can be expensive and time-consuming.

The machine offers multiple seal configurations, including Chevron, Sine Wave, and Straight-pack styles, and incorporates Tyvek webbing, an eco-friendly and economical sterilization solution compared to full-sheet options.

Nick Kirichkow, Product Manager at ULMA Packaging, emphasized the importance of right-sized packaging in the healthcare industry, “When people think of sustainability, they usually focus on recycling—but that’s just part of the story.

“Reducing waste throughout the production process, including minimizing material use and right-sizing package designs, can significantly contribute to sustainability goals.”

New flow wrap solution for fresh food packaging

In addition to its medical packaging advancements, Harpak-ULMA recently introduced the FM400 horizontal flow wrapper, designed for high-speed modified-atmosphere packaging (MAP) in fresh food applications.

Launched in January 2025, the FM400 can produce up to 150 packs per minute, ensuring airtight packaging that extends product freshness and shelf life.

Its long-dwell sealing head utilizes an advanced orbital movement mechanism to deliver hermetic seals even at high speeds.

The machine is built with strict sanitation requirements. It features a stainless steel frame and a vertical plate design that facilitates thorough cleaning with hot water and chemicals.

Its IP66-rated electronic components provide superior protection against dust and water exposure.

The FM400 offers multiple configuration options, including top-reel, bottom-reel, and side-seal versions, and supports various barrier films such as laminates and shrink films.

These features enhance product presentation and protection while catering to diverse packaging needs.

Operators can control the system via a 10-inch color touchscreen, which provides an intuitive interface, customizable help features, and seamless navigation.

Additionally, the machine includes optional monitoring tools for analyzing energy and material consumption, helping producers optimize costs and improve sustainability.

Harpak-ULMA highlighted the FM400’s integration with MES, ERP, and SCADA systems, allowing real-time production workflow synchronization, enhanced visibility, and data-driven management.

Hugh Crouch, Product Manager at Harpak-ULMA, stated, “The FM400 addresses real-world challenges faced by fresh food producers, such as maintaining high sanitation standards without compromising speed or flexibility.

Its combination of high-speed sealing technology, modular design, and connectivity presents a compelling packaging solution.”
