Heidelberg & Gallus unveil mattejet for high-quality digital labels

MatteJet is expected to drive digital adoption in the premium wine label segment, where brands demand a sophisticated, matte finish.

GERMANY – Gallus Group, a subsidiary of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, has introduced Gallus MatteJet, an innovative matte finishing technology designed for the Gallus One digital label press.

This cutting-edge solution enables inline production of high-end matte labels at the touch of a button, addressing a key challenge in digital label adoption, eliminating the traditional glossy finish associated with digital printing.

Launched at Gallus Wine Label Days, MatteJet is expected to drive digital adoption in the premium wine label segment, where brands demand a sophisticated, matte finish.

The global wine label market, valued at over US$3.5 billion, is projected to reach US$5.8 billion by 2033, presenting a lucrative opportunity for converters seeking to expand their portfolios with high-value digital printing solutions.

Historically, achieving a matte finish with digital inkjet printing required integrated flexo units or additional post-processing equipment, adding time, cost, and complexity.

MatteJet eliminates the need for these extra varnishing steps, allowing converters to maintain the surface texture of their chosen substrate while improving efficiency and profitability.

Dario Urbinati, CEO of Gallus Group, emphasized the breakthrough impact of MatteJet, “Three years ago, with the launch of Gallus One, we addressed the cost barriers to profitable digital label production.

“Now, with MatteJet, we take it a step further, offering premium brands the benefits of digitally printed matte labels—such as short runs, reduced inventory, enhanced sustainability, personalization, and on-demand printing.”

Urbinati highlighted that by removing tooling requirements and coating machinery maintenance, converters can streamline production, reduce waste, and improve turnaround times.

The innovation aligns with Gallus’ broader vision of “smart, connected printing”, bridging the gap between digital printing potential and real-world industry demands.

Designed for seamless integration with the Gallus One, MatteJet is available for both the 340mm standard printing width and the newly expanded 430mm web width, enhancing flexibility and performance.

This addition strengthens Gallus’ System to Compose concept, enabling converters to customize and optimize their production setups to meet market demands more effectively.

By making digital matte label production more accessible and cost-effective, Gallus is positioning MatteJet as a transformative solution for converters looking to capitalize on the growing demand for premium, sustainable packaging.
