KENYA – The KEPRO Sustainable Packaging, Innovation, and Circular Economy (SPICE) Awards 2024 brought together innovators, organizations, and eco-warriors at an inspiring gala dinner to celebrate the impactful contributions of sustainability leaders across Kenya.

This year’s event, with the 2nd Annual Circular Packaging Conference, recognized groundbreaking achievements in packaging design, recycling, circular economy, and community education.

Consumer education and awareness award

The Consumer Education and Awareness Award went to Slums Going Green and Clean Kenya for their transformative grassroots work in creating sustainable urban communities through education and practical action.

M-taka Waste Solutions Limited was named runner-up for its effective waste management training programs, empowering communities with the knowledge to reduce and recycle waste.

Circular economy leadership award

Haco Industries Kenya Limited took home the Circular Economy Leadership Award for its Chasing Zero Initiative, a commitment to achieving zero waste.

Their dedication to sustainable practices in the manufacturing sector set a high standard for circularity.

Runner-up M-taka Waste Solutions was also impressed with its focus on waste recovery and sustainable reuse, solidifying its role as a circular economy advocate.

Innovation & tech in packaging design award

In the Innovation & Tech in Packaging Design category, Chemolex Limited emerged as the winner with BioPactic Packaging, a cutting-edge eco-friendly packaging solution.

M-taka Waste Solutions received another runner-up title for its innovative M-taka project, which combines waste reduction with sustainable packaging solutions.

Packaging recovery and recycling award

The Packaging Recovery and Recycling Award was awarded to Mtaa Safi Initiative for its Waste to Wealth project, which turns waste into valuable resources and promotes community empowerment.

The Global Climate Change and Health Association of Kenya’s Leafylife Innovation Hub, which was runner-up, was recognized for its strides in recycling and waste recovery innovations.

SME circularity champion award

In the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Circularity Champion category, M-taka Waste Solutions continued its winning streak, receiving accolades for its waste management solutions tailored to SMEs.

HyaPak earned the runner-up spot for pioneering the conversion of invasive weeds into biodegradable packaging materials.

Youth eco-warrior award

Benson Abila of M-taka Waste Solutions was named this year’s Youth Eco-Warrior, and he was applauded for his tireless efforts in promoting sustainability among young people.

Brian Gisore Nyabuti from Slums Going Green and Clean was the runner-up. He was celebrated for his youth-driven initiatives that foster environmental stewardship in urban communities.

The SPICE Awards, organized by KEPRO, attracted a strong turnout and was supported by sponsors such as Danish Industry, EU Africa RISE, and ALN Kenya.

The event was a milestone in Kenya’s push toward a sustainable and circular economy, spotlighting innovators leading the charge toward a greener future.
