UK – Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, has announced a major milestone: over 95% of its release liners and extrusion solutions are now made from certified paper sources.
The majority of the papers used by Mondi for these products are certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable sourcing and supply chain transparency.
This shift supports responsible forest management and ensures traceability of materials throughout the production process.
Mondi’s move to certified paper aligns with its Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030), which focuses on circular-driven packaging solutions and climate action.
As of 2023, 85% of the company’s revenue came from packaging and paper products that are reusable, recyclable, or compostable.
Jurgen Van der Donck, Mondi’s Director of Sales and Business Development for Functional Paper and Films, emphasized the significance of this achievement, “As part of our MAP2030 goals, we are committed to circular-driven packaging and taking action on climate change.
“Offering a portfolio made from certified paper is a crucial part of this effort. This step allows us to improve our release liners and extrusion solutions, such as our FunctionalBarrier Paper range, while delivering the best solutions for our customers and end users.”
In line with its sustainability goals, Mondi recently introduced two new containerboard grades: ProVantage SmartKraft Brown and White.
These grades blend fresh and recycled fibers, providing strength, enhanced runnability, and printability without compromising on quality or performance.
The top layer of ProVantage SmartKraft is made from 100% fresh fiber, while the underlayer consists of 100% recycled fiber.
Like all of Mondi’s containerboards, these products are fully recyclable and made from responsibly sourced raw materials.
Mondi’s containerboard sales director, Gijs Huisman, noted the perfect timing of this launch, as the company is currently executing a €95 million (US$102.14m) upgrade of its containerboard mill in Świecie, Poland.
This investment will further enhance the company’s ability to meet customer demands with shortened lead times and more grammage options.
The ProVantage SmartKraft papers are tailored for sectors such as e-commerce, retail, and fast-moving consumer goods, offering sustainable packaging solutions that do not compromise on strength or cost efficiency.
