This new machine positions Mondi to meet the growing global demand for paper-based flexible packaging.
CZECH REPUBLIC – Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has successfully started up its cutting-edge paper machine at the Štětí mill in the Czech Republic.
Commissioned in December 2024, the €400 million (US$454.22m) investment has already delivered impressive results, with early production runs showcasing outstanding strength, runnability, and consistent paper quality.
This new machine positions Mondi to meet the growing global demand for paper-based flexible packaging. It further strengthens the Group’s vertically integrated Paper Bags business and enhances production efficiency across its entire kraft paper portfolio.
“Our team did a fantastic job delivering the project on time and within budget,” said Roman Senecky, COO Kraft Paper at Mondi.
“We are delighted with the performance of the machine and the exceptional quality of the paper. It’s exciting to see how quickly we’ve been able to produce material that meets our customers’ high expectations.”
The paper machine expands Mondi’s offering across a full range of kraft paper grades—from high strength to high porosity—supporting applications such as construction sacks and industrial bags.
It also underlines the company’s commitment to delivering reliable kraft paper supplies to customers transitioning toward paper-based, sustainable packaging solutions.
The Štětí start-up is a major milestone in Mondi’s sustainability roadmap. It supports the Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030), which commits the company to making all its packaging solutions reusable, recyclable, or compostable.
This project exemplifies Mondi’s focus on circularity and long-term investment in responsible packaging innovation.
In parallel, Mondi recently completed the successful start-up of a recycled containerboard machine at its Duino mill in Italy.
Once fully operational, the converted machine will produce 420,000 tonnes of high-quality recycled containerboard annually, using 100% recovered fibre.
These containerboard grades are ideal for lightweight corrugated packaging, particularly in fast-growing sectors such as eCommerce and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), where recyclable and cost-efficient solutions are in high demand.
The Duino site joins Mondi’s expanding network of integrated mills across Europe, including Štětí (Czech Republic), Świecie (Poland), Ružomberok (Slovakia), Frantschach (Austria), and Penshurst (United Kingdom).
Together, these facilities reinforce Mondi’s position as a leading European producer of both recycled and virgin containerboard, offering customers a resilient, flexible, and sustainable supply chain.
