Mondi unveils advanced recyclable barrier paper for sustainable packaging

The new paper-based solution is designed to meet the most demanding packaging requirements,

UK – Mondi, a global leader in eco-friendly paper solutions, has launched FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate, a high-performance, recyclable paper designed to meet stringent packaging demands.

This innovative product offers robust protection against oxygen, water vapor, and grease, making it a viable alternative to traditional non-recyclable multi-layer plastic or aluminum-based materials.

According to a company statement, the new paper achieves an oxygen transmission rate (OTR) and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) below 0.5 cm³/m²/day and 0.5 g/m²/day, respectively.

This ensures extended shelf life and consumer convenience for products like instant coffee sticks, tea sachets, dried food seasonings, muesli, cereal bars, and bouillon cubes. “FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate is the result of customer-driven innovation,” said Dirk Gabriel, COO of Consumer Flexibles at Mondi.

“With this solution, we are helping brands transition to recyclable packaging without compromising performance, aligning with our MAP2030 sustainability commitments.”

The development follows a US$18.7 million investment in cutting-edge technology at Mondi’s Solec, Poland facility, enabling increased production capacity.

A report by the company highlights that the paper delivers significantly lower cradle-to-grave CO₂ emissions compared to conventional materials.

As part of Mondi’s re/cycle portfolio, it meets stringent recyclability standards, including the Cepi Recyclability Laboratory Test Method and 4evergreen’s Recycling Evaluation Protocol, ensuring compatibility with standard recycling processes.

Designed for seamless integration, the paper works with existing horizontal and vertical form-fill-seal packing lines, allowing manufacturers to adopt it without costly production changes.

It complements Mondi’s broader FunctionalBarrier Paper range, offering varied barrier levels to suit diverse product needs and supporting brands in meeting regulatory requirements and consumer demand for eco-friendly packaging.

“As of today, 87% of our packaging solutions are reusable, recyclable, or compostable,” Gabriel added.

In related news, recent industry developments highlight growing momentum in sustainable packaging.

UPM Specialty Papers and Michelman have collaborated to create three recyclable, high-barrier packaging solutions for food applications, such as chocolate and coffee, using water-based coatings.

These innovations, announced in late 2024, emphasize recyclability and food safety, further signaling the industry’s shift toward fiber-based alternatives.

With companies like Mondi and UPM leading the charge, the sustainable packaging sector is poised for transformative growth, driven by innovation and environmental responsibility.
