New Packs: DS Smith develop new pack for Alpine Water, Cathedral City expands value range, JDO refreshes Unilever’s comfort

The new design protects Hallstein’s glass bottle consignments during transportation to e-commerce customers.

UK – Corrugated packaging specialist DS Smith has partnered with Alpine Water Produktions GmbH to develop a new transport box for Hallstein, the premium Austrian mineral water brand.

Designed to safeguard glass bottle consignments shipped via e-commerce, the corrugated solution replaces the brand’s former packaging system with a sturdier, space-saving design.

Each transport box can hold six 750ml bottles, with modular options to scale capacity to nine, 12, 15, or 18 bottles using an outer casing system.

“Our new transport boxes are demonstrating production, cost reduction, and space saving benefits, with positive impacts on the entire supply chain,” said Alexander Muhr, managing director of Alpine Water GmbH/Hallstein.

The solution underscores DS Smith’s ongoing work to improve e-commerce packaging resilience while reducing costs and environmental impact.

Cathedral City’s value-led expansion

Meanwhile, Cathedral City is focusing on affordability in the UK dairy market by expanding pack sizes within its value-led “Big Pack” range.

New offerings include 12-slice (250g) packs, 12-pack Minis (12 x 20g), 320g Grated packs, and a 1kg Grated format.

“Offering added value through bigger packs is a key focus to ensure shoppers get better returns from their food shop,” explained Lissie Bernard, brand manager at Cathedral City.

With inflation still shaping food retail dynamics, the expansion ensures the brand remains competitive for both everyday meals and convenient snacking.

JDO redesigns comfort for Unilever

On the design front, creative agency JDO has unveiled a global packaging refresh for Unilever’s Comfort laundry softener.

The redesign features bold, nature-inspired colour palettes and fresh floral motifs, paired with a modernised wordmark. The update is intended to elevate brand consistency while amplifying Comfort’s promise of “uplifting freshness.”

“Our challenge was to put freshness front and centre, creating a brand world that inspires belief in Comfort’s promise,” said Hannah Dunt, associate creative director at JDO.

Ricardo Arantes, global brand director at Unilever, praised the collaboration, “JDO has helped us strengthen Comfort’s position as a category leader, bringing a fresh perspective and elevated consumer experience.”

Together, these innovations highlight how brands are adapting packaging strategies to meet evolving demands: robust e-commerce protection, value-driven retail offerings, and design-led consumer engagement.
