Saica Flex unveils new US$7.67M facilities in Wigan, UK

The upgrade includes advanced machinery such as a high-performance printing press, perforation units.

UK – Saica Flex, the flexible packaging division of Saica Group, has officially inaugurated its upgraded facilities in Wigan, UK, following a €7.1 million (US$7.67 million) investment.

This expansion aims to enhance both productivity and sustainability, reinforcing the company’s commitment to innovation.

The upgrade includes advanced machinery such as a high-performance printing press, perforation units, a slitting machine, and a hole-punching system.

These improvements are set to boost Saica Flex’s capabilities in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), which extends the shelf life of perishable goods like sliced onions, diced fruit, and precut vegetables.

With MAP technology, these products can stay fresh for up to six days, a significant improvement over traditional packaging methods.

Beyond technological advancements, the project is expected to bring economic benefits to the Wigan community.

Saica Flex has committed to creating up to 20 new jobs, with 11 positions already filled. This investment contributes to local employment and economic development, aligning with the company’s broader sustainability and growth strategy.

Saica Group president and CEO Susana Alejandro stated, “This investment marks unprecedented progress for Saica Flex. It not only strengthens our manufacturing capabilities but also demonstrates our commitment to the Wigan community.

“We are excited to create new jobs and support economic growth while enhancing our ability to meet customer demand with sustainable solutions.”

Saica Pack’s expansion and global growth strategy

In addition to the Wigan facility, Saica Pack, the corrugated packaging division of Saica Group, recently launched a £10 million (US$12.6 million) investment in a new warehouse facility in Hartlepool, UK.

Construction is already underway, with completion expected later this year. The new warehouse, designed to accommodate up to 9,000 pallets—more than double the regional average—will significantly enhance Saica’s delivery capabilities and bolster its storage and production capacity for sheet and converted corrugated products.

Expanding beyond the UK, Saica Group has also announced plans to construct a cutting-edge corrugated packaging manufacturing plant in Anderson, Indiana.

This will be the company’s second U.S. corrugated facility and a key part of its US$800 million expansion strategy.

The investment, exceeding US$110 million (€100 million), has been approved by Saica’s Board of Directors. Construction is set to begin in May 2025, with operations expected to commence in Q4 2026.

Spanning nearly 350,000 square feet (32,500 square meters), the plant will have an annual production capacity of over 1.2 million MSF (110 million square meters) of corrugated packaging.

It will house state-of-the-art manufacturing, converting, and production lines, along with a warehouse and modern office space.

With these strategic investments, Saica Group continues to strengthen its global presence, driving innovation, efficiency, and sustainability in packaging solutions.
