USA – Global sustainable packaging company Sonoco has opened its new multimillion-dollar Metal Packaging Technical & Engineering Center in Columbus, Ohio, USA.

The 11,000ft² facility is equipped with laboratories, prototyping equipment, and training and collaborative spaces.

Located at 2850 Charter Street, the new center provides a centralized location to deliver design support, process development, technical services, engineering, and training.

President of Sonoco’s metal packaging business, Ernest Haynes, expressed his enthusiasm: “We are excited to unveil our new state-of-the-art center, which supports another milestone in our pursuit of excellence and our unwavering commitment to high-quality, precision-manufactured metal packaging.

“Our new center will foster even greater collaboration and productivity in a unified workspace where Sonoco will bring together can makers, brand owners, industry suppliers, and scientific partners to harness the latest technological advances and deliver greater value to our customers.”

Headquartered in South Carolina, Sonoco manufactures metal packaging for food and beverage products and is one of North America’s major producers of aerosol cans.

With 12 manufacturing operations across the US, the company produces steel tinplate two-piece and three-piece aerosol and food cans, closures, and packaging components.

The company also specializes in package performance and integrity testing, real-time shelf-life testing, and electrochemical corrosion testing.

Additionally, Sonoco offers training programs for large groups, focusing on manufacturing processes to boost production efficiency and quality.

Sonoco’s president and CEO, Howard Coker, emphasized the significance of the new center: “The opening of our new Steel Can Technology Institute stands as a testament to our unwavering commitment to providing superior solutions in leading-edge technology, design, and manufacturing for our customers.”

In a move to bolster its position in the French market, Sonoco joined Ligépack in April. By joining the association by the end of 2023, Sonoco can offer its expertise in converting and designing recyclable packaging without compromising product freshness.

The company plans to collaborate with other Ligépack members to make food packaging more sustainable and increase European recycling rates.

Sonoco has already been a member of several European environmental organizations, including the European Organization for Packaging and the Environment (EUROPEN) since August 2022 and the Industry Council for Packaging & the Environment (INCPEN) since May 2021.
