UAE to ban single-use plastics by 2026 in landmark environmental move

UAE will implement a comprehensive ban on the import, production, and trade of single-use plastic products.

UAE – The United Arab Emirates is taking a bold step in the fight against plastic pollution, announcing a comprehensive nationwide ban on single-use plastic products from January 1, 2026.

The ban will cover the import, production, and trade of items such as plastic cups, lids, cutlery, food containers, and plates, building on earlier restrictions targeting plastic bags and Styrofoam products.

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment confirmed the policy in June, framing it as part of the country’s broader transition toward a circular economy and sustainable waste management.

The initiative aims to cut plastic waste at the source while encouraging businesses and consumers to adopt eco-friendly, reusable alternatives.

“Plastic has permeated nearly every aspect of our lives, from shopping to the food we eat. By removing unnecessary single-use items, the UAE is reinforcing its commitment to protecting the environment and designing waste out of its systems,” said Dr. Mohammed Al Dahak, an official with the ministry.

The UAE’s approach has been gradual but firm. Abu Dhabi was the first emirate to act, banning single-use plastic bags in June 2022.

Since then, its Environment Agency (EAD) has launched an incentive-based bottle return scheme that has recovered more than 130 million bottles through reverse vending machines, smart bins, and door-to-door collection.

The scheme has diverted 2,000 tonnes of plastic waste from landfills, equivalent to about 80 truckloads, and reduced plastic bag consumption by 95%.

Dubai followed with a ban on single-use plastic bags in June 2024 and introduced restrictions on plastic stirrers, Styrofoam cups, and food containers in 2025.

From 2026, the emirate will extend the ban to plastic cups, lids, cutlery, and plates. Under the rules, retailers and restaurants must offer affordable reusable alternatives, while certain items such as bread bags, roll bags for fresh produce, and garbage bags remain exempt.

Sharjah also took early action, banning the manufacturing, trading, and import of single-use plastic bags and materials from January 2024.

Globally, single-use plastics are under mounting scrutiny as studies continue to show the spread of microplastics in air, water, and food systems.

The UAE’s decision positions the country among a growing group of nations phasing out plastic to protect ecosystems, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and shift toward sustainable consumption.

By 2026, the UAE aims not only to eliminate some of the most visible forms of plastic pollution but also to inspire regional cooperation in building a circular economy that keeps materials in use and waste out of the environment.
