CHINA – Finnish company Valmet has won a contract to provide automation and quality management solutions to Shandong Jintianhe Paper in China.
As part of the agreement, Valmet will deliver its DNA distributed control system with integrated machine condition monitoring, the IQ quality control system (QCS), and a coat weight profiler.
This initiative aims to enhance Shandong Jintianhe Paper’s production of food-grade packaging materials.
While the contract’s financial details remain undisclosed, the new systems are expected to significantly improve production control for the company’s folding boxboard machine.
The order, included in Valmet’s fourth-quarter (Q4) 2024 orders, is set for delivery in Q2 2025.
Richard Sui, sales manager for Valmet’s Automation Systems business line, expressed gratitude for the partnership, stating, “We are very grateful to Shandong Jintianhe Paper for choosing Valmet’s automation system.
“We will provide the most advanced paper machine automation systems and technologies and form an experienced project team to ensure successful delivery.”
Founded in 2022, Shandong Jintianhe Paper operates as a subsidiary of Shandong Tianhe Paper, which specializes in various paper products and mechanical pulp production.
Xu Zhenli, chair of Shandong Jintianhe Paper, highlighted the project’s significance, stating, “We are developing high-end coated white cardboard for food packaging to meet market demand and consumer aspirations for a better life.
“Regarding the automation system for coated white cardboard machines, we trust Valmet’s technology, especially their comprehensive know-how in processes, services, and automation technology. This partnership will help our new project succeed and support our sustainable development strategy.”
Valmet expands global presence with new installations
Earlier this month, Brazil’s Grupo Penha announced the installation of an advanced QCS from Valmet at its Itapira plant in São Paulo state.
The system, set to begin operations in the third quarter (Q3) of 2025, includes three scanners, a moisturiser system, and automated warp control to optimise moisture profiling and reduce warping in paperboard sheets, a critical issue exacerbated by Brazil’s fluctuating climate.
Grupo Penha’s Itapira facility, which specialises in producing corrugated cardboard packaging for various industries, will benefit from Valmet’s IQ Warp Measurement System.
Rodrigo Godoy, project manager at Grupo Penha, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We are excited to develop this innovative project together with Valmet.
“In Brazil, climate conditions vary significantly from one region to another, making it challenging to control the moisture profile when we receive a paper roll.
“By installing this Valmet system on our brand-new corrugator machine, we hope to resolve, once and for all, the chronic problem of paperboard sheet warping and paper roll moisture inconsistencies.”
The system will be installed for two stackers and will include two Valmet IQ Single-Sided Scanners with IR Moisture Measurements, a Valmet IQ Scanner S with additional IR Moisture and MW Total Moisture sensors, and an IQ Moisturizer equipped with four spray beams for precise moisture control.
Additionally, the system will feature IQ Reporting tools for enhanced data collection and process optimisation, ensuring Grupo Penha maintains a competitive edge in the market.
