Waitrose introduces cork recycling trial to boost eco-friendly practices

UK – Supermarket chain Waitrose has introduced a cork recycling trial across seven of its UK stores, starting on 7 October 2024.

This initiative, the first of its kind by a major UK supermarket, will launch at the Salisbury store and then expand to six other locations, including Saltash, Lymington, Bath, Godalming, Truro, and Maidenhead, in November.

The trial encourages customers to deposit their used natural corks at designated collection points, where Amorim, a cork processing company, will recycle them.

According to Barry Dick, Waitrose’s Beer, Wine, and Spirits Global Bulk Wine Sourcing Manager, the chain’s customers use nearly 25 million natural corks annually, which often end up in landfills due to the absence of a dedicated waste stream for cork.

Dick emphasized that cork, a durable and valuable material, has the potential to be repurposed into various products. He noted that the trial represents a step toward reducing waste and enhancing the sustainability of the category.

If customers show enthusiasm for the program, Waitrose plans to extend the initiative to more stores next year.

Once recycled, natural cork can be transformed into a range of products, from mulch that improves soil health to household items such as placemats, coasters, flooring, and even footwear.

Customers can differentiate between natural and synthetic corks by touch, as natural cork is lighter, spongier, and less smooth.

The trial will help Waitrose gauge customer interest and guide the potential expansion of the program. The company also aims to explore innovative uses for recycled cork in future offerings, further supporting its commitment to sustainability and the circular economy.

Marija Rompani, Director of Ethics and Sustainability at the John Lewis Partnership, expressed enthusiasm for the trial, seeing it as an opportunity to reduce waste and keep valuable materials in circulation.

She highlighted that the initiative aligns with the Partnership’s broader sustainability goals, which focus on minimizing waste and promoting ethical practices.

Sainsbury’s leads with vacuum-packed lamb mince packaging

Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s has made a major move towards reducing plastic waste by becoming the first UK retailer to transition its entire fresh lamb mince range to vacuum-packed packaging. This change is expected to save 26 tonnes of plastic annually.

The new vacuum-packed packaging, which reduces plastic usage by 65% per product, will be rolled out across all fresh lamb mince products.

Starting at £3.95 (US$5.19) for 250g, the vacuum-sealed packaging extends product freshness by eliminating oxygen, a key factor in spoilage. Thus, it increases shelf life and freezer durability.

Richard Crampton, Sainsbury’s Director of Fresh Food, noted that switching to vacuum-packed packaging directly responds to customer demand for reduced plastic usage.

He emphasized that Sainsbury’s is committed to making environmentally beneficial changes and was proud to be the first major supermarket to introduce this packaging innovation for a widely purchased product.

The new packaging is also recyclable at in-store flexible plastic collection points, aligning with the retailer’s goal to halve its own-brand plastic packaging usage by 2025.

Both Waitrose and Sainsbury’s initiatives underscore a growing trend in the UK retail sector toward more sustainable practices, responding to customer demand for eco-friendly solutions while addressing broader environmental concerns.
