PAKPRO wins Best EPR Scheme of the Year at Circular Economy Awards

KENYA – PAKPRO, Kenya’s leading producer responsibility organization (PRO), has been awarded the Best Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Scheme of the Year at the Circular Economy Awards.

The award ceremony, organized by Sustainable Inclusive Business (SIB-K) and Rondure Advisory Limited, celebrates companies and individuals making significant strides in circular economy practices across Kenya.

PAKPRO’s recognition highlights its innovative approach to waste management, particularly its drive for sustainable practices and compliance with Kenya’s gazetted EPR regulations.

In a statement following the win, PAKPRO expressed its commitment to advancing Kenya’s circular economy while creating jobs and enhancing local economic growth.

“PAKPRO remains the leading PRO in Kenya and will continue to be steadfast in ensuring that we as a country achieve a circular economy while creating sustainable jobs and enhancing our economy,” the organization said.

PAKPRO’s initiatives focus heavily on collecting and recycling used packaging materials, especially used beverage cartons (UBCs).

In a notable collaboration with Naivas supermarket, PAKPRO has introduced an incentive-based program encouraging the public to return UBCs to select Naivas outlets in Nairobi.

Dubbed the “Leta Carton Pack Ushinde” campaign, the initiative rewards participants with points redeemable for prizes and aims to increase public awareness of responsible waste disposal and recycling practices.

The organization added, “Bring back your UBCs to any of our select Naivas stores, rack up points, and stand a chance to win amazing prizes!”

The EPR model, supported by Kenya’s Ministry of Environment, mandates that companies take responsibility for their product waste post-consumer use.

With Kenya’s ongoing efforts to tackle waste through policy and public-private partnerships, PAKPRO’s award-winning initiatives underscore the importance of producer responsibility in achieving sustainable waste management and a circular economy in the region.
