Orora introduces high-speed digital can printing at Dandenong facility

This company produces aluminium cans of various types and sizes, including classic, sleek, and slimline designs

AUSTRALIA-  Orora has launched its innovative Helio digital printing system at its Dandenong facility in Victoria, Australia.

This cutting-edge technology enables direct-to-shape printing on aluminum cans, delivering vibrant, photorealistic designs at an impressive speed of up to 500 cans per minute.

The system eliminates the need for traditional plates, labels, or shrink sleeves, streamlining production and enhancing design flexibility for beverage brands.

According to Orora, the Helio system, built on Velox IDS-NC 500 technology, marks a global first by integrating high-speed digital printing directly into a can manufacturing line.

This innovation allows for near-instant design changeovers, making it ideal for short and mid-size production runs.

Beverage categories such as craft beer, ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages, carbonated soft drinks, sparkling water, and kombucha stand to benefit from this agile production capability.

“Primary packaging is a key driver in consumer purchase decisions,” said Chris Smith, Executive General Manager of Orora Cans.

“With Helio, we empower brands to express their unique identity through packaging, offering rapid turnarounds, no tooling costs, and premium visual effects that were once exclusive to large-scale runs.”

The technology supports seamless 360-degree decoration, high-opacity whites, and matte or gloss finishes, opening new creative possibilities for brands.

By printing directly onto aluminum cans, Helio reduces material waste associated with labels and sleeves, aligning with sustainability goals.

Aluminum’s infinite recyclability further enhances the environmental credentials of this solution.

In a statement, Orora emphasized that Helio’s efficiency minimizes overproduction and supports on-demand printing, enabling brands to launch seasonal campaigns or test new products with minimal lead time.

The system’s integration follows Orora’s US$59 million investment in a multi-size can line at Dandenong in 2023, reinforcing its commitment to innovation.

Recent industry developments highlight the growing adoption of digital can printing. For instance, NOMOQ, a European digital printing specialist, has expanded its operations to meet rising demand for sustainable, small-batch packaging solutions.

Their technology, similar to Helio, supports vibrant designs and eliminates plastic waste, reflecting a broader industry shift toward eco-friendly packaging.

“This is a transformative moment for beverage packaging,” Smith added. “Helio not only enhances design freedom but also supports sustainability, helping brands connect with consumers in a dynamic and environmentally conscious market.”
