This means that every component of the bag-in-box, including the bag, tap, and carton, is now recycle-ready.

GERMANY – SIG has introduced a recyclable bag-in-box solution for wine, featuring the Terra RecShield BD and an innovative Terra FlexTap dispenser.
According to the company, this marks the first wine packaging in their portfolio to earn recognition from the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) for meeting stringent recyclability standards, ensuring compatibility with North American recycling systems.
The Terra RecShield BD addresses the unique challenges of wine packaging.
“Wine requires a careful balance of oxygen barrier, ease of dispensing, and durability during processing, bottling, and distribution, all while prioritizing recyclability,” said Teresa Bernal-Lara, global head of Film Development for Bag-in-Box and Spouted Pouch at SIG.
“With this solution, we’ve developed a recyclable laminate that meets the rigorous demands of wine preservation and distribution.”
This new packaging joins SIG’s expanding portfolio of eco-friendly solutions, including the Terra RecShield PE-42B for water and Terra RecShield D for postmix syrup, both recognized for their recyclability.
The APR Design for Recyclability Recognition validates that the entire package, including the bag and tap, can be reprocessed into new materials, promoting a circular economy.
“Achieving this milestone shows we can prioritize sustainability and circularity while delivering product protection, quality, and reliability,” stated Jami Leveen, head of Sustainability at SIG North America.
“This empowers our customers to meet their corporate responsibility goals while ensuring an exceptional consumer experience.”
In a statement, SIG highlighted recent collaborations, including a partnership with Pulpac to develop paper-based closures for aseptic cartons and a joint venture with Cooperoeste to launch yogurt and dulce de leche in SIG CloverCap pouches.
In related development, a South African winery announced the launch of the world’s first fully recyclable 3-liter bag-in-box wine packaging in April 2025, featuring a recyclable box, handle, tap, and ink.
Unlike traditional designs requiring material separation, this innovation allows the entire package to be recycled as a single unit, setting a new standard for sustainability.
Priced competitively, with production costs estimated at US$0.50–US$1.00 per unit depending on scale, such advancements align with growing consumer demand for environmentally conscious options.
