The buyback scheme is specifically designed for HPMC’s branded glass bottles used for packaging fruit products, including apple juice, jams, preserves and squashes, ensuring that the packaging materials are recovered and reprocessed rather than discarded as waste.

INDIA – Himachal Pradesh Horticultural Produce Marketing and Processing Corporation has launched a glass bottle packaging buyback scheme, offering ₹1 (US$0.012) for 200 ml bottles and ₹2 (US$0.024) for 600 ml bottles, as part of a structured reverse logistics network to boost recycling in the state.
The initiative, implemented through a Standard Operating Procedure, encourages consumers, retailers, and distributors to return empty HPMC glass bottles through a collection system that offers financial incentives at every stage.
Consumers receive ₹1 (US$0.012) for every 200 ml bottle and ₹2 (US$0.024) for every 600 ml bottle returned to authorised retailers, while retailers and distributors earn incentives of up to ₹4 (US$0.048) per bottle depending on their role in the collection process.
Reverse Logistics Network and Processing at Jarol Plant
As per the SOP, empty bottles collected through retailers, distributors and HPMC offices will be transported to the corporation’s fruit processing plant at Jarol for segregation and recycling.
A dedicated reverse logistics system has been established to ensure efficient collection and transportation of the returned bottles.
The buyback scheme is specifically designed for HPMC’s branded glass bottles used for packaging fruit products, including apple juice, jams, preserves and squashes, ensuring that the packaging materials are recovered and reprocessed rather than discarded as waste.
HPMC has urged consumers, retailers and distributors to actively participate in the initiative, which is expected to reduce glass waste and promote responsible recycling practices across the state.
Multi-Stakeholder Incentive Model and Environmental Impact
The corporation believes the programme will create a sustainable model that benefits all stakeholders while contributing to a cleaner, greener Himachal Pradesh.
The tiered incentive structure ensures that everyone involved in the collection chain, from individual consumers to large distributors, receives a financial return for participating.
By recovering glass packaging for reuse or recycling, the scheme reduces the burden on local landfills and conserves the energy and raw materials required for manufacturing new glass bottles.
The initiative also aligns with the Himachal Pradesh government’s broader environmental objectives, including the state’s commitment to reducing single-use plastics and promoting circular economy practices across the horticulture and food processing sectors.
