SAUDI ARABIA – Qassim’s date industry has modernised its packaging from traditional open harvesting containers to standardised cardboard cartons, reshaping regional marketing and supply chains while improving post-harvest preservation.

The transition from bulk pits to standardised cartons tailored for commercial transport, distribution and retail display has reshaped how dates move from farms to consumers.

These upgrades aim to safeguard crop quality, minimise post-harvest spoilage and meet the technical requirements of growing date processing plants across the region. 

Local farmers noted that agricultural priorities have expanded from focusing solely on harvest yields to prioritising post-harvest preservation and value. 

Standardised boxes have eliminated the inefficiencies of bulk handling, protecting delicate fruit varieties and ensuring products reach markets in optimal condition.

Consumers and buyers reported that uniform packaging has improved the retail experience by providing clear visibility of fruit grades, weight specifications and date varieties, while offering practical convenience for transport and home storage. 

This transparency supports premium positioning for higher-grade varieties and allows retailers to merchandise dates more effectively alongside other packaged foods.

Standardised weights and dimensions also reduce handling losses and improve shelf utilisation in modern grocery formats.
