Amcor opens coating facility in Malaysia for enhanced healthcare solutions

This innovation enhances product consistency while minimizing material waste.

MALAYSIA – Amcor, a global leader in packaging solutions, has officially completed its state-of-the-art coating facility in Selangor, Malaysia, reinforcing its commitment to healthcare packaging in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.

Marking a regional first, the facility features air knife coating technology, which uses high-velocity air streams to apply coatings evenly across packaging materials.

This innovation enhances product consistency while minimizing material waste, contributing to quality and sustainability goals.

The new facility is integrated into Amcor’s existing operations in Selangor, forming a consolidated campus dedicated to healthcare packaging.

This strategic expansion offers local and regional customers key advantages, including improved supply chain agility and reduced lead times.

The site, equipped with advanced systems such as water-based coating technologies and online inspection tools, is part of Amcor’s broader plan to scale its healthcare packaging capabilities across APAC.

President of Amcor Flexibles APAC, Chris Kenneally, noted, “Amcor’s investment in this facility reflects our unwavering commitment to supporting customers across the Asia-Pacific.

“By introducing cutting-edge coating technology and enhancing local production capacity, we can better meet the rising demand for sterile, dependable healthcare packaging, while providing greater flexibility and security.”

This move complements Amcor’s series of regional initiatives, including the acquisition of Chinese healthcare packaging company MDK, the development of a grid lacquer paper unit in India, and the recent opening of a coextrusion blown film and printing plant in Singapore.

Virginie Maes, Global Vice President of Healthcare at Amcor, added, “Localizing the production of our global product platform brings us closer to customers, strengthening supply security and responsiveness.

“With investments in advanced technologies and regional capabilities, we’re addressing the growing need for high-performance healthcare packaging and reaffirming our commitment to delivering consistent, innovative value worldwide.”

In addition to its healthcare advancements, Amcor is also expanding its sustainable packaging portfolio.

Last month, the company launched the AmFiber Performance Paper stand-up pouch, a refill pack tailored for soluble coffee and other dry beverages.

Initially rolled out in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), the pouch is part of the AmFiber range, which emphasizes recyclable, paper-based packaging alternatives.

With 85% fiber content and certifications from CEPI and Aticelca, the pouch supports kerbside recycling in several European countries.

Its superior barrier properties and seal integrity make it an ideal sustainable solution. It can reduce the carbon footprint of dry beverage packaging by up to 73%.

Together, these initiatives demonstrate Amcor’s dual focus on innovation in healthcare packaging and leadership in sustainable materials across global markets.
