Amcor’s Winterbourne site earns gold-standard medical packaging certification

Amcor’s certification provides healthcare customers with additional assurance that the Winterbourne site operates a risk assessment process designed to support regulatory compliance and patient safety.

UK – Amcor has achieved ISO 13485:2016 certification at its Winterbourne site, reinforcing its credentials as a premier supplier of medical and healthcare packaging solutions across the EMEA region.

The Bristol-based facility, a center of excellence for medical packaging, successfully passed a rigorous audit in February 2026 to secure the internationally recognized quality management standard specifically designed for medical devices.

This certification represents a significant leap beyond the site’s previous ISO 9001:2015 standard, demonstrating Amcor’s commitment to packaging excellence where patient safety hangs in the balance.

What the Certification Means for Medical Packaging

ISO 13485:2016 demands meticulous control of processes, supplier relationships, and customer requirements, all critical in medical device packaging where even microscopic failures can have serious consequences.

Industry data reveals that nearly 10 percent of medical device recalls stem from packaging failures.

Amcor’s certification provides healthcare customers with additional assurance that the Winterbourne site operates a risk assessment process designed to support regulatory compliance and patient safety.

For medical device manufacturers, partnering with an ISO 13485-certified packaging supplier streamlines their own regulatory compliance and reduces supplier qualification burdens.

18 Months of Preparation Pay Off

Jon Cowgill, general manager at Amcor Winterbourne, described gaining the certification as a huge milestone for the facility team.

He explained that ISO 13485:2016 is recognized by customers as a key quality standard for the medical device industry.

The team’s focus has always been on safety and delivering brilliantly for customers, making this achievement a great endorsement for the Winterbourne site.

Preparation took approximately 18 months, beginning with an assessment followed by a structured plan to align processes with ISO 13485:2016 requirements.

During this period, the team improved risk management, strengthened supplier standards, and reinforced focus on patient safety.

Broader Healthcare Packaging Strategy

The certification supports Amcor’s broader healthcare packaging strategy across EMEA, where production sites are working toward achieving either ISO 13485 or ISO 15378 certification by the end of 2027.

With ISO 13485 now in place, the Winterbourne site’s strengthened quality system is positioned to support a broader range of healthcare programs, including Class I and eventually Class IIa medical devices.

The certification also aligns the site with FDA Quality Management System Regulation requirements, opening doors to regulated markets in both Europe and the United States.

Many medical device manufacturers require their suppliers to hold ISO 13485:2016 certification, making this achievement a strategic differentiator that strengthens Amcor’s position as a premier packaging supplier worldwide.
