CHINA – German multinational chemical company, BASF has announced plans to invest in the capacity expansion of polymer dispersions at its production site in Daya Bay Petrochemical Industrial Park in Guangdong, China.
The German company will add a second production line. Expected to be operational in 2024, the new line will increase the production capacity of polymer dispersions.
The Dispersions & Resins division of BASF develops, produces and markets a range of high-quality polymer dispersions, resins, additives and electronic materials worldwide.
These raw materials are used in formulations for a number of industries, including coatings, construction, adhesives, printing and packaging, electronics and paper.
With its comprehensive product portfolio and its extensive knowledge of the industry, the Dispersions & Resins division offers its customers innovative and sustainable solutions and helps them advance their formulations.
The Daya Bay site is strategically located near key customers in South China and produces a wide range of products, including acrylics and styrene butadiene-containing dispersions, for industries such as construction, architectural coatings, paper, and adhesives, as well as new market segments like lithium-ion batteries.
“This expansion marks another key milestone in the development of our polymer dispersions business in Greater China,” said Jeff Liu, Director of Dispersions Greater China at BASF. “
“Innovative Polymer Dispersions are vital for our customers to succeed in their markets. The additional capacity will enable agility and sustainable growth for our customers, especially in the South China market”
The expansion plan aligns with the German firm’s strategy to continue investing in growing Asian markets. It will support the architectural coatings, construction, and battery binder industries, notes the company.
Additionally, the expanded capacity will aid advanced innovations with acrylics and styrene butadiene-containing dispersions.
Bir Darbar Mehta, Senior Vice President, Dispersions Asia Pacific at BASF, added: “Together with our global and regional R&D centers, we are keen to offer our customers innovative products with enhanced sustainability features.
“For example, the Daya Bay site produces next-generation dispersions products such as BASF’s award-winning Acronal® PLUS 7679.
“It combines our latest Advanced Odor Reduction (AOR) technology that overcomes the smell of the paint on interior walls and defines a new benchmark for interior paints.”
In January, the company announced similar expansion plans at its production site in Merak, Indonesia.
The BASF Merak site is located near its monomer suppliers and has an on-site jetty to facilitate logistics. The production line enhancement will be completed in the second half of 2023.
