The facility now boasts smart SCADA systems for remote monitoring.

NIGERIA – Beta Glass Plc, West and Central Africa’s leading glass packaging manufacturer, has achieved a new global milestone with the successful rebuild of its DF1 container glass furnace at its state-of-the-art facility in Ughelli, Delta State.
Completed in just 48 days, the project sets a new world benchmark for furnace rebuild speed and precision in the glass container industry.
The DF1 rebuild involved a full transformation of a 250-tonne, 70-square-meter furnace, integrating advanced energy-efficient and digital control technologies.
The project was executed under the leadership of Chief Operating Officer Jagdish Agarwal, with support from over 130 international contractors working in continuous shifts, and in close collaboration with global suppliers such as BDF, Furnotherm, All Glass, Bottero, and MSK Tiama.
The rebuild covered every major aspect of furnace operation, from demolition and reinstallation of 2,000 MT of refractories to modernization of steel structures, cooling systems, and electrical networks.
The facility now boasts smart SCADA systems for remote monitoring, upgraded PLC and HMI controls, and AI-powered inspection lines for real-time defect detection.
The new furnace integrates both Narrow Neck Press and Blow (NNPB) and Blow & Blow technologies, enhancing production flexibility for lightweight food jars and bottles.
Early performance metrics show 7% energy savings and improved temperature uniformity, extending equipment lifespan by up to 17 years.
“This world-leading DF1 rebuild underscores our commitment to operational excellence, innovation, and sustainability,” said Alexander Gendis, CEO of Beta Glass Plc.
“Delivering such a complex project safely, on time, and to the highest standards reinforces our leadership in African glass manufacturing.”
Beta Glass joins a global wave of modernization across the glass packaging sector. Earlier this year, Verallia completed a low-carbon furnace rebuild in France designed to cut CO₂ emissions by 15%, while O-I Glass in the U.S. unveiled its MAGMA modular furnace, enabling flexible, lower-energy production runs.
Similarly, Ardagh Glass Packaging has introduced hybrid furnaces in Europe that combine renewable electricity and gas to reduce energy use.
By completing the DF1 rebuild in record time, Beta Glass not only strengthens its production capacity but also positions Nigeria as a hub for sustainable, high-precision glass manufacturing in Africa’s fast-evolving packaging landscape.
