UK – Sustainable packaging solution provider Coveris has announced a significant expansion of its barrier films capabilities by investing in vacuum skin packaging (VSP) production at its specialist extrusion site in Winsford, Cheshire, claimed to be the UK’s largest blown extrusion facility for polyethylene (PE) films.
The investment at the Winsford site includes the establishment of a dedicated manufacturing hall and the installation of advanced VSP conversion equipment.
Coveris Winsford leverages its industry-leading co-extrusion expertise to manufacture nine-layer EVOH barrier film, serving the meat, fish, and dairy sectors.
Vacuum skin packaging offers products a skin-like appearance, enhancing visual appeal, and extending shelf-life by up to 25 days compared to traditional packaging methods, while also improving product security.
Coveris’ VSP films are compatible with major standard skin packing lines and can seal to various materials, including PET, PE, PP, aluminum, and cartonboard.
Driving Coveris Winsford’s innovation is its Film Science Lab, where technologists focus on advancing, optimizing, and validating films.
The company plans to downgauge the thickness of its VSP films below the industry average to minimize environmental impact.
Sujoy Bose, Managing Director of Coveris Winsford, commented: “Coveris continues to lead in developing high-performance technical films.
The addition of VSP films to our portfolio is an exciting opportunity to leverage our capabilities in multi-layer barrier films, backed by significant investment and innovation expertise. This aligns with Coveris’ No Waste vision: no product waste.
In February 2024, Coveris announced the successful signing and completion of S&K LABEL spol. s r.o. (S&K LABEL) in the Czech Republic, marking its third venture into Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) with recent acquisitions in Hungary and Poland.
S&K LABEL is Coveris’ first entry into the labels sector outside the UK, providing synergies for a comprehensive pan-European business platform.
Christian Kolarik, Group CEO of Coveris, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “We are thrilled by this opportunity to bolster our labels business, expand our operational footprint, and broaden our geographical presence in mainland Europe.”
Demonstrating commitment to sustainable packaging solutions, Coveris plans to showcase its latest innovations at the Anuga FoodTec exhibition in Germany from March 19 to 22, 2024.
