DS Smith partners Famifarm to launch recyclable fibre-based packaging solution

The packaging solution features a hatch mechanism that speeds up the unpacking process.

FINLAND – DS Smith, a leading packaging solutions provider, has partnered with Famifarm, Finland’s largest producer of potted herbs and salads, to introduce a recyclable fibre-based transport box.

This innovative solution, designed for Famifarm’s products distributed from greenhouses to retail outlets across Finland, enhances efficiency in packaging and unpacking processes.

The new transport box features a hatch mechanism that, according to DS Smith, accelerates unpacking by up to four times compared to previous solutions.

Its ergonomic design allows for easy folding after use, reducing waste and simplifying handling for retail staff.

The packaging also prominently displays Famifarm’s branding, including the Järvikylä logo with its iconic family manor house and 1674 inscription, ensuring brand visibility.

In a statement, Famifarm CEO Jussi Loimusalo praised the collaboration, noting that retail chains have embraced the functional transport box for its time-saving benefits.

He emphasized DS Smith’s transparency and commitment to sustainability, highlighting the partnership’s focus on long-term cooperation.

The high-quality corrugated cardboard boxes were described as both practical and visually appealing, meeting Famifarm’s branding needs.

The packaging was developed through a collaborative effort led by Jyrki Petrelius, DS Smith’s cluster design creative specialist, and Veli-Matti Karvonen, automation expert and development manager in Finland.

Petrelius explained that the solution was tailored for automated packaging lines, benefiting retail stores by maintaining product protection while streamlining unpacking processes.

The design’s versatility makes it suitable for both large and small retail environments.

In related news, DS Smith continues to advance sustainable packaging innovations.

In August 2025, the company collaborated with a European beverage brand to launch a fibre-based alternative to plastic bottle multi-packs, reducing single-use plastics by an estimated 50,000 units annually, equivalent to US$75,000 in environmental cost savings.

This follows DS Smith’s July 2025 introduction of cardboard trays for automotive headlights, replacing expanded polypropylene solutions and cutting material costs by approximately US$30,000 per production cycle.

This partnership with Famifarm demonstrates DS Smith’s ongoing commitment to replacing problem plastics with renewable, fibre-based alternatives.
