Coveris unveils MonoFlexBP tray for sustainable chilled food packaging

The MonoFlexBP tray is engineered to replace non-recyclable, mixed-material packaging while providing extended shelf life.

UK – Sustainable packaging provider Coveris has introduced the MonoFlexBP tray, a resealable monomaterial solution for refrigerated food applications, designed to replace non-recyclable, mixed-material packaging.

According to the company, this innovation extends shelf life while prioritizing consumer convenience and environmental responsibility.

The MonoFlexBP tray targets the fresh food sector, where maintaining product quality and usability is critical.

Its resealing system allows consumers to open and close the tray multiple times, reducing food waste and improving the user experience.

Coveris has also developed thermoformable bottom films to enhance product protection, ensuring chilled items remain fresh for longer.

For products requiring high oxygen barriers, such as perishable goods, Coveris offers a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyamide (PA)-free lidding film.

This film, compatible with polypropylene trays, seals securely, peels easily, and reseals effectively, maintaining freshness through a high gas barrier.

In a statement, Katja Killian, Coveris’ BU flexibles business development director, said, “We are extremely pleased to launch MonoFlexBP tray for refrigerated goods, offering high-performance solutions that address both environmental impact and consumer demand.”

The trays, part of Coveris’ No Waste mission, are fully recyclable and compatible with existing packaging machinery, enabling manufacturers to transition seamlessly.

Suitable for processed meats, sausages, dairy, cheese, and other chilled products, the trays can be customized with gravure or flexographic printing and finished with a matt or paper-effect lacquer for enhanced branding.

In August 2025, Coveris launched a monomaterial packaging solution for tortilla wraps, developed in collaboration with a manufacturer to replace non-recyclable polyamide/polyethylene structures.

A report by the company noted that the MonoFlex Thermoform film, tested at its Food Science Lab in Gainsborough, UK, achieved a six-month shelf life for tortillas with minimal preservatives, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable innovation.

Recent updates indicate Coveris will showcase the MonoFlexBP tray at FachPack 2025, held from September 23-25, alongside other sustainable solutions like Ultra-Low SIT CPP lamination films for high-speed packaging.
