NETHERLANDS – Duni Group, a leader in sustainable dining and food packaging solutions, has joined forces with UK-based Notpla to introduce an innovative plastic-free packaging range featuring a seaweed coating.

Known as the Alga product line, this range utilizes technology crafted from cardboard and Notpla’s renewable seaweed coating, officially recognized by Dutch authorities as truly plastic-free and in alignment with the pending EU directive on single-use plastics.

This new packaging solution not only offers a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic packaging but also ensures that moisture and oils from food do not seep through, making it suitable for a wide variety of food types.

Pierre Paslier, co-founder and co-CEO of Notpla, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to be partnering with Duni Group to see our seaweed-based, plastic-free solutions continue to improve the environmental impact of businesses all around the world.”

The Alga series comprises four products, including a mealbox, a standard box, and two trays, designed to meet various requirements in the foodservice sector.

These products are manufactured with a focus on minimizing energy consumption and raw material usage, further reducing their environmental impact.

Caroline Tobiasson, Duni Food Packaging Solutions Product Manager, emphasized that the Alga series symbolizes Duni Group’s commitment to redefining the industry and reducing its environmental footprint.

This sustainability-focused collaboration follows another significant move by Duni Group, where they acquired a majority stake in the German reuse company Relevo.

This acquisition aims to strengthen Duni’s food packaging business and offer circular solutions to customers for various occasions.

Previously holding a minority stake in 2021, Duni now owns 50.02% of Relevo, based in Munich, which provides tech-enabled system solutions for reusables to catering and restaurant businesses.

With Relevo being consolidated into Duni’s food packaging solutions business area, the brand will offer a range of products, including tableware, software, and system solutions, while operating as a separate brand under Duni Group.

Robert Dackeskog, President, and CEO of Duni Group emphasized the importance of providing solutions that minimize waste throughout a product’s lifecycle, stating, “We want to give more than we take from the planet.”

Relevo’s founder and managing director, Gregor Kolb, expressed pride in being part of Duni Group and their shared vision of a circular and environmentally friendly takeaway experience.

With synergies in commercial operations and potential in international market access, both parties are excited about the collaboration and the opportunity to further develop and grow sustainable reuse solutions.
