Evonik unveils sustainable paper-based packaging for its MetAMINO product line

The new dual-layer paper packaging is entirely recyclable as a mono-material paper bag in accordance with EU recycling criteria.

GERMANY – Evonik, a German specialty chemicals company, has introduced a new 25kg paper bag for its MetAMINO (DL-methionine) brand by removing the plastic film layer.

For several years, the packaging team at Evonik Animal Nutrition has been developing strategies to reduce plastic usage in MetAMINO and other feed additive packaging.

The transition to the new packaging has commenced at Evonik’s Antwerp site in Belgium, with rollout plans underway for its locations in Singapore and Mobile, USA.

According to the company, the new dual-layer paper packaging is entirely recyclable as a mono-material paper bag in accordance with EU recycling criteria, aligning with the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) to enhance recyclability.

At the Antwerp facility, this shift is projected to eliminate 32 metric tons of polyethylene use each year and reduce the packaging’s carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by 20%.

Extensive validation has verified that the updated packaging maintains MetAMINO’s integrity, with its 36-month shelf life staying intact, according to the company.

“Product packaging plays an important role in our company’s efforts to reduce CO₂ emissions and achieve a resource-conserving circular economy,” remarked Evonik Animal Nutrition’s amino acid business, Dr Dirk Hoehler.

“Packaging must protect the product effectively, but it should do so in the most environmentally friendly way possible.”

In April this year, Mondi teamed up with Evonik to launch a recyclable, ready-made paper bag for storing and transporting chemical powders.

This collaboration supports Evonik’s drive to reduce its environmental footprint, which began in 2022 with a search for more sustainable packaging alternatives.

Together with Mondi, the company developed a solution that eliminates plastic-coated layers, replacing them with a high-performance paper-based design.

The result is a two-layer kraft paper bag that is 30% lighter than the previous version. This weight reduction, combined with full recyclability, significantly decreases the carbon impact of the packaging.
