UK – Mondi has teamed up with Evonik to launch a recyclable, ready-made paper bag for storing and transporting chemical powders—specifically fumed silica, a key ingredient used in various industrial and consumer applications.
This collaboration supports Evonik’s drive to reduce its environmental footprint, which began in 2022 with a search for more sustainable packaging alternatives.
Together with Mondi, the company developed a solution that eliminates plastic-coated layers, replacing them with a high-performance paper-based design.
The result is a two-layer kraft paper bag that is 30% lighter than the previous version. This reduction in weight, combined with full recyclability, significantly decreases the carbon impact of the packaging.
Mondi assessed the new solution using its internal Product Impact Assessment tool, while Evonik conducted rigorous performance testing to ensure compliance with safety and functionality standards. Following successful trials, the bags are now being rolled out commercially.
Crafted from high-porosity kraft paper, the bags offer strength, flexibility, and secure sealing through a minimal spot coating.
They are compatible with industry recycling standards, including CEPI v.3 and 4evergreen guidelines.
“These valve bags are designed for high-speed filling, which is essential when handling sensitive specialty chemical powders,” said Florian Ullrich, Sales Director at Mondi Paper Bags Germany.
“We were pleased to work with Evonik to create a solution that maintains quality and safety while lowering the carbon footprint.”
The paper bags are engineered to perform under vacuum chamber conditions, allowing for efficient, clean filling and reliable product protection.
Mondi’s paper structure ensures quick air release and strong sealing, helping to maintain integrity throughout the supply chain.
After filling, the bags are palletised and shrink-wrapped, ensuring they meet Evonik’s strict durability and transport readiness requirements.
“At Evonik, we are committed to driving transformation and exploring sustainable innovations,” said Susanne Pellengahr, Head of Sustainability Transformation at Evonik’s Smart Effects business line.
“Our collaboration with Mondi demonstrates how we are aligning every part of our business to reduce CO₂ emissions, shift our portfolio, and contribute to the circular economy.”
This partnership marks a step forward in sustainable packaging for industrial applications, highlighting how cross-sector collaboration can accelerate environmental progress without compromising performance.
