The new approach has helped bring simpler packaging across different markets in Europe, with a uniform portfolio for more than 100 products.

AUSTRIA – Fixit Gruppe has reduced its European packaging emissions by 135 tonnes of CO₂ through a partnership with Mondi that streamlined more than 100 paper bag products into a single uniform portfolio of standardised formats.
The building materials group, which supplies DIY retailers across Europe, had been managing a broad mix of packaging types due to different product features, climate conditions and national rules.
Mondi carried out an audit at its bag application centre in Frantschach, Austria, evaluating paper grammage, barrier needs and plastic reduction potential, leading to the agreement on a single portfolio of standardised paper bag formats for the company’s building materials range.
Standardised Portfolio and Performance Testing
Mondi supplied sack kraft paper from its own mills and produced paper valve bags intended to protect powdered building materials from moisture during handling and storage, with the packaging also reviewed under the 4evergreen fibre-based packaging recyclability evaluation protocol.
The new approach has helped bring simpler packaging across different markets in Europe, with a uniform portfolio for more than 100 products.
Fixit Gruppe research and development director Bernhard Zott stated that the company needed packaging that protects a wide range of building materials, is practical on construction sites and supports its climate strategy, and that Mondi assessed everything thoroughly while working closely with the teams to improve functionality, sustainability and quality requirements.
Emissions Reduction and Circular Economy Impact
The streamlined packaging approach reduced related greenhouse gas emissions by 135 tonnes of CO₂ compared to the prior year, demonstrating how packaging optimisation can contribute to broader sustainability goals.
Mondi Italy paper bags international key account manager Davide Battiston stated that the project shows how the company helps customers solve complex packaging challenges while reducing environmental impact.
By analysing Fixit Gruppe’s full product range and applying its paper making and converting expertise, Mondi developed a standardised solution without compromising on performance, with the project serving as an example of how close collaboration with customers can unlock long-term value across their packaging portfolio.
The recyclable fibre-based packaging design supports the circular economy by enabling paper bags to be recovered and recycled through existing paper recycling streams.
