BULGARIA – Guala Closures, a global leader in closure systems for spirits packaging, has acquired the remaining 30% stake in Guala Closures Bulgaria, securing full ownership of the facility.
This move reinforces the company’s strategic focus on the fast-growing luxury closures market.
Gabriele Del Torchio, President of Guala Closures, emphasized the significance of the acquisition, “This acquisition strengthens our presence in the luxury segment, where closures are designed to enhance a brand’s identity through aesthetics, design, and functionality.
“Our R&D centers enable this by combining premium materials with advanced production technologies.”
Acquired in 2010, the Bulgarian facility has become a critical hub for Guala Closures, contributing significantly to the company’s global operations.
The plant employs over 270 people and has achieved more than 40% growth over the past four years.
Its expertise in luxury closures leverages materials such as glass, wood, ceramics, and zamak, aligning with Guala’s commitment to innovation and craftsmanship.
Tancho Mihaylov, General Manager of Guala Closures Bulgaria, highlighted the facility’s role in maintaining high standards, “Our focus has been on integrating cutting-edge technologies and maintaining complete control over the production process, from design to final product.
“Specialization and tailor-made solutions remain at the core of our strategy to meet customer needs.”
Expanding the luxury portfolio
This acquisition follows Guala Closures’ recent purchase of Vicenza-based high-end closures supplier Labrenta in July.
The Labrenta acquisition is expected to drive synergies across industrial and commercial operations, enhancing the company’s ability to offer a comprehensive range of luxury closures.
Labrenta’s shareholders, Gianni and Amerigo Tagliapietra, will reinvest in Guala Closures and take on key managerial roles within the luxury segment.
Del Torchio described this step as pivotal, “We are advancing toward our goal of becoming a world leader in luxury closures, driven by innovation and a customer-centric approach.”
With a global network spanning from Mexico to China and over 200 active intellectual property rights, Guala Closures continues to solidify its position as a leading innovator in the luxury packaging sector.
The company, initially founded as a producer of natural cork for the Italian wine market has grown over the years under the direction of Gianni and Amerigo to establish itself as an international highly innovative firm and obtain 30 patents.
The company is expected to achieve more than €30 million (US$30.09 million) in revenues across its 800 customers in 70 countries in 2022. It has plants in Italy, Brazil and Mexico as well as a commercial branch in the United States.
