Henkel unveils innovative solvent-free adhesive for sustainable packaging

The adhesive will prioritize food safety while significantly reducing CO2 emissions

GERMANY – Henkel Adhesive Technologies has launched a solvent-free adhesive system, Loctite Liofol LA 7837/LA 6265, designed to advance sustainability in high-performance packaging.

According to the company, this cutting-edge solution targets applications like retort packaging for pet food, ready meals, microwave products, and pharmaceutical packaging, offering a blend of superior performance and environmental benefits.

In a statement, Henkel emphasized that the adhesive prioritizes food safety while significantly reducing CO2 emissions.

The system eliminates the need for energy-intensive drying processes associated with solvent-based adhesives, streamlining production and minimizing material usage.

With a monomer content of less than 0.1% and no epoxy silane, Loctite Liofol LA 7837/LA 6265 withstands temperatures up to 134°C, making it ideal for demanding packaging needs.

Its compatibility with PET/Alu/CPP and modern polyolefin structures ensures versatility across various packaging formats.

Cagri Turkmen, Henkel’s Flexible Packaging Market Strategy Manager, stated, “With Loctite Liofol LA 7837/LA 6265, we are expanding our high-performance adhesive portfolio for retort applications, delivering a solvent-free solution that balances outstanding performance with enhanced sustainability.”

“This innovation empowers our customers to meet market demands, reduce emissions, and boost production efficiency.”

The adhesive’s lightweight application and room-temperature curing process further enhance efficiency, allowing for high-speed processing under diverse conditions.

Henkel noted that its compatibility with conventional laminating machines simplifies the transition to this eco-friendly system, making it a practical choice for manufacturers worldwide.

A report by the company highlights its ongoing efforts to support the circular economy, with initiatives like the development of recyclable adhesives and bio-based materials.

In a related development, Henkel recently collaborated with Packsize to introduce Eco-Pax, a bio-based hot-melt adhesive for right-sized packaging.

This partnership, announced in November 2024, aims to reduce emissions by up to 32% across millions of boxes annually, reinforcing Henkel’s leadership in sustainable innovation.

By integrating advanced technology with environmental responsibility, Henkel’s latest adhesive system sets a new standard for the packaging industry, addressing both performance and sustainability goals.
