GERMANY – Herma has reduced the thickness of its new Herma PE white light film (grade 853) by almost 17 percent compared to a standard film – from 78mm to 65mm – while maintaining nearly the same functionality.

The company has also expanded its Thin Range with new, thinner self-adhesive materials.

Herma product manager Hendrik Kehl emphasized that reducing material is key to conserving resources and lowering costs for printers and label users.

Thin materials are also more cost-effective, increasing the incentive to use them and achieving the important goal of the zero-waste hierarchy.

Label users benefit in several ways. With reduced thickness, about 10 percent more label material fits on a roll, resulting in fewer roll changes and more efficient labeling machine running times.

This also reduces warehousing space requirements while maintaining the same number of labels. Herma is committed to expanding its Thin Range, which includes various thin film and paper qualities.

“State-of-the-art coating technology will allow us to make further progress in this area in the future,” said Kehl.

Due to its special surface treatment, the glossy surface of Herma PE white light ensures good print quality in conventional printing processes, such as UV flexographic printing.

Herma PE white light forms the basis for attractive, glossy, and opaque labels, ideally used on PE surfaces for recycling reasons.

Typical applications include labels for cosmetic and personal care products, household cleaners, and products requiring weather and chemical resistance.

The high flexibility of the PE film also allows for easy application on curved surfaces and flexible packaging. The PE film is equipped with adhesive 62Xpc, specially developed for film labels.

Using 2-layer technology and well-matched adhesive layers ensures good processing properties and high-quality adhesive performance.

Herma now offers various self-adhesive materials in the Thin Range to cover the most common standard applications.

In addition to Herma PE white light (grade 853), the range includes Herma PP white light (grade 884) and Herma PP white 40 (grade 892).

Hermalaser sheet 50 (grade 133) is a lightweight and supple material for producing label sheets, ensuring permanent and reliable labeling of various surfaces.

For paper labels on rolls, the Thin Range includes Hermacoat light (grade 238), a white self-adhesive label paper with a slightly glossy coating on one side and lower grammage (70g/sqm). Hermatherm C (grade 902) is ideal for paper labels used in the weighing area of food packaging. Hermatherm G BPA-free (grade 907) also benefits from weight reduction due to significantly lighter backing paper (grade 543).

EAN codes and other code systems can be clearly displayed on both paper materials.
