The move aims to transform cold chain logistics through eco-innovation, responsible material use, and sector education

UK – UK-based manufacturer Hydropac has introduced its Wool Thermal Postal Pockets, a high-performance alternative to traditional plastic-based solutions.
According to the company, this innovation marks a significant step toward transforming cold chain logistics through eco-conscious materials and smarter design, targeting industries such as meal kits, perishable food deliveries, retail samples, and pharmaceuticals.
The Wool Thermal Postal Pockets are designed to maintain thermal integrity for 24 to 48 hours, depending on configuration and ambient conditions.
Available in small (250 x 310 mm) and medium (320 x 410 mm) sizes, the pouches ensure temperature compliance for chilled and ambient-sensitive goods without requiring bulkier packaging.
“This isn’t about chasing trends. It’s a commitment to better materials and genuine circularity. Our solution outperforms its plastic predecessor while eliminating long-term environmental harm,” Colin Rowland, Hydropac’s managing director, said in a statement.
A report by industry experts highlights the pockets’ ability to optimize box loading, minimize void space, and enhance load stability, ensuring compliance with carrier standards.
The design reduces plastic content by 80%, featuring a recyclable plastic outer layer compatible with supermarket collection schemes and a compostable, biodegradable, and reusable wool liner.
This dual-component system enables easy curbside separation, promoting efficient post-use recovery for both single-use and reuse-cycle logistics.
Hydropac’s launch aligns with its “Switch Sides” campaign, initiated earlier this year to steer businesses away from non-recyclable chilled packaging.
“These pockets are part of a broader sustainability roadmap, empowering our customers to meet ESG goals and regulatory targets,” Rowland added.
The company is also developing eco-friendly alternatives to gel packs, EPS boxes, and mixed plastic insulation, reinforcing its commitment to environmental responsibility.
In related news, recent innovations in sustainable packaging include Estonia-based Woola’s wool-based protective packaging, launched to replace bubble wrap for e-commerce.
According to industry updates, Woola’s compostable mailer pouches and thermal liners, made from waste wool, offer similar shock-absorbent and temperature-regulating benefits, complementing Hydropac’s efforts in reducing plastic reliance.
These advancements signal a growing industry shift toward natural, biodegradable materials to meet rising consumer demand for eco-friendly solutions.
Hydropac’s Wool Thermal Postal Pockets, priced from US$2.30 each, are available for sampling, with customization options for branding starting at 5,000 units.
