INEOS Styrolution launches 100% bio-attributed polystyrene for greener food packaging solutions

The new material offers an impressive 172% reduction in carbon emissions.

GERMANY – INEOS Styrolution, a global leader in high-performance styrenics, has introduced Styrolution PS 158K BC100, a 100% bio-attributed polystyrene developed specifically for food packaging applications.

The launch marks a significant milestone in sustainable material innovation for the food industry, providing a lower-carbon alternative without sacrificing performance or safety.

The new material, certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) mass balance approach, is manufactured using entirely biobased feedstock, offering an impressive 172% reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil-based polystyrene.

This environmental leap is achieved without compromising the clarity, heat resistance, or functional strength required for food-grade applications.

As of early 2025, food trays made from Styrolution PS 158K BC100 have entered the Japanese market through a strategic partnership with a prominent retail franchise.

This early rollout underscores growing global demand for sustainable packaging alternatives in markets that are increasingly regulated and environmentally conscious.

The material complies with stringent food safety regulations, including the Japanese Food Sanitation Act, and has received JCII’s A certification, affirming its suitability for direct food contact.

Its high clarity and thermal stability make it an attractive choice for food manufacturers and retailers seeking both environmental responsibility and strong shelf appeal.

Marcela Villegas, INEOS Styrolution’s Vice President for APAC Business Management, emphasized the significance of the development, saying, “We are thrilled to mark this milestone in integrating bio-attributed materials into everyday life.

“It shows that sustainability can be achieved while meeting regulatory standards, allowing businesses to progress in their environmental goals without compromising quality or safety.”

The launch of Styrolution PS 158K BC100 aligns with a broader trend in the packaging industry toward carbon-neutral and circular materials, as governments and corporations push for greener value chains.

This development follows INEOS Styrolution’s earlier innovations, such as the release of Zylar EX350, a new grade of methyl methacrylate butadiene styrene designed for electronic component packaging.

That material offered a novel balance of stiffness and toughness for demanding applications like carrier tapes.

Together, these initiatives demonstrate INEOS Styrolution’s ongoing commitment to material innovation that supports sustainability, regulatory compliance, and industrial performance, a move that positions the company as a leader in the transition to bio-based and circular packaging economies.
