Nairobi startup transforms discarded banana pseudostems into tree-free packaging, creating new income for farmers while tackling plastic pollution.

KENYA – Kenyan sustainable packaging startup Zuripacks Limited is turning discarded banana pseudostems into biodegradable, tree-free packaging materials, transforming agricultural waste into a valuable industrial resource while addressing growing demand for environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic.
With Africa generating an estimated 90 million tonnes of banana crop waste annually, the company is leveraging an abundant but underutilized biomass resource to manufacture packaging products ranging from shopping bags and food containers to corrugated shipping cartons.
Banana plants produce fruit only once before their pseudostems are cut down, leaving behind large volumes of fibrous waste that is often left to decompose or burned in fields.
Zuripacks has developed a proprietary process to extract cellulose-rich fibres from the discarded stems and convert them into durable packaging materials without relying on wood pulp.
By replacing conventional paper made from timber, the company aims to reduce pressure on forests while offering biodegradable alternatives to petroleum-based plastic packaging.
The innovation has earned Zuripacks recognition as one of the Top 10 finalists at the GEC+ Africa Kenya Regional Pitch Competition 2026, highlighting growing investor interest in circular economy solutions that combine environmental impact with commercial potential.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the business model is creating additional income opportunities for smallholder farmers.
Through a decentralized sourcing network, Zuripacks purchases banana pseudostems directly from growers in key production regions including Kisii, Meru and Murang’a counties.
The approach enables farmers to generate revenue from agricultural residues that previously had little or no commercial value while reducing the labour and costs associated with disposing of post-harvest biomass.
Removing the decaying stems also helps minimize pest infestations and supports healthier crop production.
The company’s model is also generating employment opportunities in rural communities through fibre collection, processing and transportation activities, contributing to local economic development alongside environmental sustainability.
Zuripacks’ innovation comes as governments and multinational companies intensify efforts to reduce dependence on single-use plastics.
With negotiations continuing on a global treaty to combat plastic pollution and many consumer brands committing to more sustainable packaging, demand for renewable, fibre-based materials continues to grow.
Unlike conventional paper production, which depends heavily on wood fibre and can require significant water and chemical inputs, agricultural residue-based packaging offers an alternative route to fibre production while supporting circular resource use.
The startup’s biggest challenge now lies in scaling production to meet rising market demand.
Expanding manufacturing capacity, automating fibre extraction and strengthening collection networks will be critical as the company seeks to supply retailers, food manufacturers and exporters looking to replace plastic packaging with sustainable alternatives.
Zuripacks reflects a broader trend across Africa, where entrepreneurs are increasingly converting agricultural waste into high-value packaging materials, supporting both rural livelihoods and the transition toward a more circular and resource-efficient packaging industry.
