NETHERLANDS – LyondellBasell (LYB), a global leader in the chemical industry, has introduced Pro-fax EP649U, a new high-performance polypropylene impact copolymer explicitly developed for the rigid packaging sector.
Designed for thin-walled injection moulding, Pro-fax EP649U is particularly suited for food packaging applications.
It delivers high flow properties and rapid crystallisation, enabling the efficient production of thin-walled containers that enhance both productivity and product quality.
The advanced additive package incorporated into Pro-fax EP649U provides several processing benefits, including easy mould release, reduced static, and improved downstream handling—especially on high-speed filling lines.
According to LYB, the material’s enhanced flexural modulus also increases stacking strength, allowing for lighter, thinner packaging designs without compromising durability.
A standout feature of the new grade is its superior organoleptic performance. Free from controlled rheology byproducts, Pro-fax EP649U prevents the transfer of unwanted taste or odour to packaged goods, a critical factor for food contact materials.
The product complies with food contact regulations in the U.S. and international markets.
It is manufactured using a non-phthalate catalyst and contains vegan-friendly additives—aligning with consumer and industry demands for safer, more sustainable materials.
Additionally, Pro-fax EP649U is part of LYB’s CirculenRenew and CirculenRevive product portfolios.
These product lines are focused on sustainability, offering polyolefins made from renewable or recycled feedstocks certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS standard.
CirculenRenew utilizes bio-based waste and residues, while CirculenRevive uses pyrolysis oil derived from plastic waste.
“At LYB, our purpose is creating solutions for everyday sustainable living,” said James Deaton, Commercial Manager at LyondellBasell.
“Pro-fax EP649U exemplifies our commitment to sustainable innovation by providing our customers with choices that meet their environmental goals without compromising performance.”
Enhancing packaging aesthetics with Polybatch Effects FROST
In a separate innovation, LyondellBasell also introduced Polybatch Effects FROST last year—a line of masterbatches designed to transform the visual appeal of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging.
These additives offer a matte frost finish in two distinct styles, adding a premium look that enhances brand perception and improves the visual quality of recycled PET.
Polybatch Effects FROST is compatible with various colourants, recyclable, and suitable for near-infrared (NIR) sorting.
It also complies with U.S. FDA regulations for food and cosmetic packaging, is cost-effective, and can be easily integrated into existing injection stretch blow moulding processes.
“These new product grades are another example of how LYB creates solutions for everyday sustainable living,” said Nuria Vallespi Salvado, Business Manager for LYB Colors.
“With our innovative masterbatch portfolio and technical support, we help brand owners achieve their design vision while advancing their sustainability objectives.”
As one of the world’s largest polymer producers and a pioneer in polyolefin technologies, LYB continues to develop advanced materials for critical applications, including food safety, clean water, and quality healthcare—driving innovation with sustainability at its core.
