LyondellBasell introduces Polybatch Effects FROST for enhanced PET packaging

NETHERLANDS – Multinational chemical company LyondellBasell (LYB) has unveiled its latest innovation, Polybatch Effects FROST, designed to transform the aesthetics of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging.

These new masterbatches offer a matte frost effect in two distinct styles, expanding the possibilities for creative packaging design.

Compatible with various colors, Polybatch Effects FROST masterbatches provide a high-end appearance that enhances brand image and makes recycled PET more visually appealing.

Designed with sustainability, these masterbatches are recyclable, compatible with NIR sorting, and comply with US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations for food and cosmetic packaging.

They also present a cost-effective solution by seamlessly integrating existing injection stretch blow molding processes.

Polybatch Effects FROST can be applied to various packaging, including personal and home-care products.

LYB Colors Business Manager Nuria Vallespi Salvado commented, “These new product grades are another example of how LYB creates solutions for everyday sustainable living.

“With our innovative masterbatch portfolio supported by our technical teams, we are helping brand owners achieve their desired look while keeping their sustainability goals at the forefront.”

LYB is one of the largest polymer producers and a pioneer in polyolefin technologies. It develops and manufactures products for a range of applications, including food safety, clean water, and quality healthcare.

Last month, the company unveiled plans to construct an integrated plastic waste sorting facility in Knapsack, Germany. This move marks a significant step forward in the company’s commitment to sustainable practices.

The facility will occupy a sizable area south of an existing industrial park. LyondellBasell has secured a land lease agreement with Yncoris GmbH for its development.

The envisioned hub will serve as a convergence point for various sorting and recycling operations, primarily focusing on processing mixed plastic waste, which currently goes unrecycled and is often incinerated for energy recovery.

This initiative aligns with LyondellBasell’s broader strategy to bolster mechanical and chemical recycling efforts. The sorted feedstock will benefit its existing facilities in Geleen, the Netherlands, and Wesseling, Germany.

The project’s first phase will see the construction of a sorting facility, set to commence operations in the first quarter of 2026.

Yvonne van der Laan, LyondellBasell’s Executive Vice President for Circular and Low-Carbon Solutions, emphasized the strategic importance of Knapsack’s proximity to the company’s Wesseling facilities, which facilitate the development of cutting-edge recycling technologies and the scaling up of operations.
