UK – Paper and packaging company, Mondi has created a new paperbag solution called Protector Bag ExpandForm, which comes with an expandable feature to rollpack mattresses.

According to Mondi, Protector Bag ExpandForm replaces the plastic packaging that is currently used with a reusable and flexible alternative.

The paperbag solution can also be customized and expanded to various sizes while securing the mattress.

Made with Mondi’s Kraft paper, the paperbag packaging can be recycled, thus contributing to a circular economy. As it is made from renewable materials, the packaging is easy to dispose of and recycle in currently available paper waste streams.

The Protector Bag ExpandForm paper bag is resistant to puncture and is suitable for printing, which means that brands can customize their packages with a top-quality appearance.

In contrast to plastic packaging, paper layers are breathable and emit gases that evaporate quickly with the new packaging, said Mondi.

Fabio Barbieri, Mondi paper bags sales director said: “Consumers are actively seeking packaging that is responsibly sourced and easy to recycle.

“This new solution ticks both boxes: it is easier to open and to dispose compared to large rolls of plastic and avoidable packaging used previously.

“Protector Bag ExpandForm needs no secondary packaging to protect the product and will be stable throughout the whole delivery journey.”

Mondi also announced a partnership with mattresses and sleeping products manufacturer Megaflex Schaumstoff, making it the first customer of Protector Bag ExpandForm.

Mondi will also work with machine producer FillMatic to help Megaflex in its transition from plastic rollpacking equipment to the paper-based alternative, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Megaflex Schaumstoff managing director Karsten Löhr said: “The Protector Bag ExpandForm is a perfect fit for our mattresses and the plastic saving we estimate is significant – over 18t every year!

“The paper packaging is appreciated by our customers, and a big step forward in our sustainability journey, and thanks to our good partnership with Mondi we can use more sustainable packaging, that positively contributes to our sustainability commitments.”

Last month, Mondi announced that it is investing in different advanced technologies to boost the capacity of its FunctionalBarrier Paper range.

Mondi said it is building a new production building there that will be equipped with new types of machinery, including an extrusion coater as well as a slitting machine.

This new investment will allow Mondi to address the increasing demands of its customers by providing a sustainable and paper-based packaging solution.
