Mondi optimises logistics at KOMSA: digital printing tech for labelless parcels

It enables vivid, multi-colour prints, even on challenging surfaces, using water-based, food-safe inks without the need for clichés or plates.

FRANCE – Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has expanded its portfolio for KOMSA, a leading service provider in the information and communications technology sector (ICT) in Germany, with a high-performance digital printing solution, enabling label-free, customised, and high-volume packaging.

KOMSA is utilising Mondi’s advanced printing technology to embed sequential barcodes straight onto corrugated packaging, eliminating the need for separate labels or manual application.

KOMSA handles up to 35,000 parcels daily and demands top-tier efficiency, especially with the pressure of next-day delivery expectations.

Operating out of Hartmannsdorf, Germany, KOMSA stands as a key player in the country’s digital infrastructure distribution.

To meet these demands, the company has implemented cutting-edge innovations across its packaging operations.

Mondi’s integration of digitally printed sequential barcodes directly onto corrugated packaging addresses the rising demand for delivery through streamlined operations, enabling sequential barcodes to be added directly during packaging production and eliminating the need for post-process labelling.

The main challenge was ensuring barcode clarity on brown corrugated board, regardless of orientation, while maintaining speed and accuracy in high-volume scanning environments.

“Our collaboration with Mondi has been cooperative and solution-driven from the outset. We provide the numbering sequences, and Mondi delivers perfectly printed packaging. We are extremely satisfied with the quality,” said Harald Josef Ollinger, Corporate Spokesperson at KOMSA.

This solution forms part of Mondi’s broadened digital printing capabilities, strengthened through its acquisition of Schumacher Packaging. and is tailored for high-volume, bespoke packaging needs.

Another advantage is that barcodes printed on all four sides of the packaging allow for reliable identification, even when parcels are rotated.

Ollinger added, “One less source of error. And the best part? No labels, no adhesive, and no extra materials needed.”

The solution not only streamlines operations but also advances sustainability goals. By eliminating the need for labels, KOMSA reduces materials and waste, moving closer to a more efficient and eco-conscious logistics system.

Mondi’s high-performance digital printing offers a fast, flexible, and sustainable solution for packaging.

It enables vivid, multi-colour prints, even on challenging surfaces, using water-based, food-safe inks without the need for clichés or plates.

This technology supports customised designs for various campaigns, allows direct printing of barcodes and QR codes, and reduces lead times for quicker market delivery. Its flexibility makes it an adaptable solution for a variety of packaging needs.
