UK – UK-based packaging giant Mondi has inaugurated a state-of-the-art kraft paper machine at its Štětí mill in the Czech Republic.

The facility, operational as of November 2025, marks a key step in enhancing production capabilities for eco-friendly materials.

The new machine generates 210,000 tonnes of high-performance kraft paper annually.

According to company details, this output focuses on paper-based flexible packaging solutions driven by e-commerce expansion and sustainability priorities in the sector.

This installation forms part of a broader US$463.8 million investment initiative at the mill. The program aims to increase overall capacity and optimize operations for various kraft paper types.

High-strength and high-porosity grades from the machine will support applications in construction, industrial sectors, and e-commerce.

Production will also cover speciality papers equipped with functional barrier properties, allowing for more efficient manufacturing across the product lineup.

The opening ceremony in November 2025 drew international customers and partners to the Štětí site.

During the event, a panel discussion brought together customers, equipment suppliers, and industry experts to explore market trends, sustainability challenges, and collaboration opportunities within the packaging supply chain.

Mondi Group CEO Andrew King addressed attendees, stating: “This is more than a paper machine, it is a symbol of what we can achieve when innovation, sustainability and teamwork come together.”

“It enables us to continue delivering great service to our customers and the high-quality packaging materials they want to help them achieve their sustainability goals.”

The Štětí mill upgrade positions Mondi to handle rising volumes in sustainable alternatives to traditional plastics.

Company representatives noted that the investment will create a more balanced production flow, reducing inefficiencies in kraft paper processing.

Further, the new machine incorporates energy-efficient designs, contributing to lower carbon emissions in manufacturing.

Mondi plans to ramp up output gradually, with initial runs targeting e-commerce clients seeking lightweight yet durable packaging.

In parallel developments that month, Mondi broadened its food packaging offerings.

The company now provides corrugated and solid board options integrated with digital printing features.
