INDIA – Global engineering and manufacturing giant Motherson has partnered with Japan’s Sanko to establish a joint venture focused on sustainable packaging solutions in India and Europe.
This strategic collaboration aligns with Motherson’s commitment to providing environmentally responsible solutions while enhancing material handling and logistics efficiencies.
Founded in 1951, Sanko is Japan’s leading manufacturer of plastic material handling products and a pioneer in sustainable packaging.
The company specializes in durable, reusable, and fully recyclable packaging solutions, catering to various industries.
With a strong engineering foundation and in-house technical expertise, Sanko has been at the forefront of developing innovative, eco-friendly products.
By combining Motherson’s extensive presence in India and Europe with Sanko’s packaging expertise, the new venture aims to deliver cutting-edge solutions for both automotive and non-automotive sectors.
The collaboration is expected to drive cost savings, improve supply chain efficiency, and support industries seeking sustainable alternatives to conventional packaging.
Vivek Chaand Sehgal, Chairman of Motherson, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership, stating, “This collaboration with Sanko represents a diversification of our business.
“By reimagining packaging as an engineered solution rather than a commodity, we can drive logistics efficiencies while helping customers achieve their sustainability goals.”
Sanko’s President, Toshihiko Goto, echoed this sentiment, adding, “We are thrilled to partner with Motherson. Their global reach combined with our expertise in material handling solutions will enable us to bring greater value to customers and expand our footprint worldwide.”
Samvardhana Motherson International Limited (SAMIL), founded in 1986, is India’s largest auto ancillary company and ranks among the top 15 global automotive suppliers.
Sanko, with 27 factories across Japan, continues to lead in sustainable material handling innovation.
Together, the two companies are set to redefine packaging standards by integrating sustainability with engineering excellence.
Demand for eco-friendly packaging in India
The demand for eco-friendly packaging in India is on the rise, driven by several factors. According to a report by Research and Markets, the Indian packaging industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 26% from 2021 to 2026, with a significant portion of this growth attributed to the demand for eco-friendly packaging solutions.
This growth is fueled by consumer awareness about the environmental impact of plastic packaging and government initiatives to promote sustainable practices.
A survey conducted by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in 2023 indicated that over 60 million consumers are willing to pay a premium for biodegradable packaging.
The shift towards eco-friendly packaging is driven not only by consumer preferences but also by businesses’ desire to reduce their environmental impact.
By adopting eco-friendly packaging solutions, businesses can meet consumer demand and demonstrate their commitment to sustainability, enhancing their brand image and reputation.
