Origin Materials, Royal Hordijk Packaging partners for sustainable PET bottle cap production

Origin Materials and Royal Hordijk Packaging have started large-scale production of PET bottle caps in Europe

NETHERLANDS – Origin Materials, a technology company focused on eco-friendly materials, has partnered with Royal Hordijk Packaging, a leading Dutch plastic packaging manufacturer, to mass-produce polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle caps.

The collaboration aims to enhance recyclability and promote circularity in the global packaging industry, addressing a market valued at over US$65 billion.

Royal Hordijk Packaging, with over a century of expertise in innovative packaging, serves industries such as food, personal care, pharmaceuticals, and horticulture across more than 25 countries.

According to the partnership details, Hordijk will leverage its advanced PET extruders to produce extruded sheets, which will feed into Origin Materials’ CapFormer production lines.

These high-speed systems, owned by Origin and operated at Hordijk’s European facilities, will transform the sheets into bottle caps, including tethered designs that align with the EU’s Single-Use Plastic Directive to improve recycling rates.

John Bissell, CEO of Origin Materials, stated, “Royal Hordijk Packaging combines expert manufacturing, a robust base of operations in Europe, and significant global reach.”

“Their extrusion expertise enhances the capital efficiency of our CapFormer lines, and we look forward to producing billions of PET caps together, advancing packaging to its next evolution.”

The monomaterial PET caps are designed to simplify recycling by eliminating the need to separate caps from bottles, a common challenge with traditional polyethylene or polypropylene caps.

Rik Hennink, CEO of Royal Hordijk Packaging, said, “At Hordijk, we believe the future of packaging is circular. Partnering with Origin Materials to scale PET bottle cap production aligns with our mission to innovate and reduce environmental impact.”

“These monomaterial solutions point toward high-performing, sustainable products.”

The caps also offer lightweighting benefits and extend product shelf life, making them a game-changer for both manufacturers and consumers.

In a recent development, Origin Materials announced a US$100 million multi-year contract with its first customer for PET caps, alongside partnerships with US-based Reed City Group and Switzerland’s Bachmann Group to expand production capacity.

A report by Origin indicates that its CapFormer System, which recently passed a Factory Acceptance Test, has already produced millions of caps using recycled PET, reinforcing its commitment to circularity.
