The packaging has been certified as 88% recyclable by Circular Analytics in Germany

GERMANY – Sonoco has partnered with Lorenz, a leading Germany-based savory snack manufacturer, to introduce its innovative rigid paper can for Lorenz’s Crunchips Stackers.
The eco-friendly packaging, launched across Germany in May 2025, is 88% recyclable, featuring a protective inner layer that eliminates the need for aluminum foil and a metal base while ensuring the chips remain fresh and flavorful.
Julia Gieser, senior brand manager at Lorenz, emphasized the strategic importance of this launch.
“Crunchips Stackers is the ideal product to showcase our packaging innovations to a wide audience,” she said. “With this recyclable paper-end can, we reaffirm our commitment to sustainability while delivering high-quality, tasty snacks that meet consumer expectations.”
The collaboration, spanning three years, highlights the synergy between Lorenz’s sustainability goals and Sonoco’s technical expertise.
According to Lorenz, the paper-based cans significantly reduce the company’s reliance on plastic, aligning with its mission to minimize environmental impact.
“Our partnership with Sonoco was crucial in bringing this product to life,” Gieser added. “Their support throughout the development process enabled us to turn our sustainability vision into reality.”
Peter Görlitz, sustainability manager at Sonoco Europe, praised Lorenz’s forward-thinking approach.
“Lorenz’s adoption of our paper-end can for Crunchips Stackers demonstrates their dedication to responsible packaging,” he said. “It’s a powerful example of how paper-based solutions can drive progress in recyclability and support the circular economy.”
Lorenz’s snacking portfolio, which includes potato chips, peanut puffs, pretzel sticks, crackers, and nuts, now benefits from this sustainable packaging innovation.
In a related development, Sonoco recently expanded its sustainable packaging efforts by supplying Austrian spice and herb company Kotányi with its GreenCan packaging for a new seasoning range.
A report by Sonoco indicates that the GreenCan, made of 92–98% recyclable paperboard, offers robust barrier properties and is available in various shapes and sizes, further showcasing Sonoco’s commitment to versatile, eco-conscious solutions.
This follows their broader initiative to ensure 75% of their rigid plastic packaging carries recyclable claims by 2025, reinforcing their leadership in sustainable packaging innovation.
