The funds will go toward scaling up from lab development to industrial trials of its seaweed-based biodegradable membrane.

WALES – Welsh start-up PlantSea has raised approximately €400,000 (US$476,110) in crowdfunding to accelerate the scale-up of its seaweed-derived biodegradable packaging material.
The funding pushes PlantSea’s total seed round to more than £1.85 million, combining grants and private investment.
According to the company, the capital will enable it to increase biopolymer production capacity by up to 100 times and support demonstration-scale manufacturing trials across the UK, Europe and Asia.
PlantSea’s natural polymer film is produced from seaweed and is designed to dissolve in water or biodegrade in compost.
The company says the material has been engineered to match the cost of polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), commonly used in laundry and cleaning capsules, while offering compatibility with existing manufacturing infrastructure.
The film can reportedly be heat-sealed, vacuum-formed and processed using conventional equipment without the need for machinery modifications.
Positioned as a marine-safe alternative to petroleum-derived plastics, the material is being trialed through paid pilot projects with global brands.
PlantSea has also outlined plans to establish a biorefining plant in Wales, aligning with broader regional ambitions to build capacity in sustainable materials and bio-based manufacturing.
Investors in the latest round include Angels Invest Wales, Sustainable Ventures, Syndicate Room and Innovate UK.
PlantSea is also one of nine projects across Mid and North Wales to secure a share of £2.95 million (US$4.03m) in Collaborative Research & Development (CR&D) funding from Innovate UK, aimed at strengthening agri-tech and food-tech innovation ecosystems in the region.
The announcement comes amid growing momentum around seaweed-based and compostable packaging solutions in the UK and Europe.
In related developments, 2M Sustainable Packaging Technologies recently received an Innovate UK SMART Grant to advance FlexSea, a biomaterial derived from red seaweed.
Targeting the personal care sector, the project aims to commercialize a home-compostable packaging material in partnership with the University of Warwick’s Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), leveraging its engineering and plastics processing expertise.
Meanwhile, London-based start-up Notpla has secured a €4 million (US$4.65 million) Horizon Europe grant to lead a consortium of 14 partners developing a fully plastic-free, home-compostable coffee cup.
The program seeks to replace conventional plastic-lined paper cups, an estimated 500 billion of which are discarded globally each year, with seaweed-based alternatives that deliver heat resistance and liquid barrier performance without generating plastic waste or microplastic pollution.
Together, these initiatives underscore intensifying efforts to transition seaweed-based materials from niche innovation to scalable, industrial-ready packaging solutions.
