Plastics SA appoints Samuel Kumbula to lead sustainability efforts across South Africa’s plastics industry

SOUTH AFRICA – Plastics SA has announced the appointment of Samuel Kumbula as its new Sustainability Project Coordinator, marking a significant step in the organization’s mission to deepen its commitment to the circular economy and sustainable plastics management.

Based at the Midrand head office, Sam brings over eight years of experience in environmental management, coupled with a proven record of community engagement, project execution, and strategic leadership.

Sam’s career reflects a deep-rooted understanding of the plastics value chain, particularly at the grassroots level.

His work with waste pickers, buy-back centres, and Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs) across KwaZulu-Natal has provided him with valuable insights into the practical challenges and opportunities within the recycling and recovery landscape.

His ability to build bridges between communities and industry players is expected to be pivotal in enhancing the inclusivity and effectiveness of Plastics SA’s sustainability programs.

A major highlight in Sam’s career was his role as Project Manager for the Transformative Riverine Management Project (TRMP) under eThekwini Municipality’s Economic Development Cluster.

The project spanned 24 wards and employed 27 environmental teams, focusing on river health, waste management, and the eradication of invasive plant species.

Sam personally led the training of 389 individuals, including project supervisors, environmental officers, and community-based EnviroChamps, empowering them with knowledge in recycling, river clean-ups, and environmental advocacy.

His professional journey is also shaped by global exposure. Sam has travelled extensively across Southern Africa and Europe, visiting Botswana, Germany, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, where he studied various waste management frameworks.

This international experience equips him with a broadened perspective and an innovative edge in addressing South Africa’s unique environmental challenges.
