ProAmpac advances sustainable packaging with fiber-based solutions

The “Fiberization of Packaging” initiative aims to replace traditional plastic laminates with curbside-recyclable or compostable paper materials

USA – ProAmpac, a global leader in flexible packaging, has unveiled its 2025 Impact Report, marking a decade of innovation with a strong focus on sustainable packaging.

The report highlights the company’s shift from plastic to fiber-based alternatives, aligning with global demands for environmentally friendly solutions.

According to a company spokesperson, ProAmpac’s “Fiberization of Packaging” initiative transforms non-recyclable materials into fiber-based formats compatible with curbside recycling, significantly advancing circularity in the packaging industry.

“We are committed to reducing environmental impact while maintaining performance,” the spokesperson said.

“Our ProActive Recyclable platforms, including the R-2300 series for food, pet care, and home care, demonstrate how fiber-based solutions can replace traditional plastics.”

The report notes a 16% reduction in waste-to-landfill in 2024, reflecting early success in the company’s sustainability efforts.

Neil Farmer, a UK packaging expert, emphasized the challenges of ProAmpac’s rapid transformation.

“Scaling fiber-based alternatives is critical for circularity, especially as plastic recycling growth stalls,” he said.

“ProAmpac’s work in this area is commendable, though their portfolio still includes plastic pouches, indicating there’s more progress to be made.”

The company’s sustainability strategy aligns with select UN Sustainable Development Goals, formalized through a 2022 materiality assessment.

ProAmpac’s life cycle assessments (LCAs) show fiber-based formats reduce greenhouse gas emissions, fossil fuel use, and water consumption compared to rigid or foil-based alternatives.

“Our LCAs empower customers to make data-driven decisions for sustainable packaging,” the spokesperson added.

Materials are sourced from FSC, PEFC, and SFI-certified forests, ensuring renewable resources and enhanced recyclability.

In a statement, ProAmpac highlighted its verification process, combining internal testing, third-party certifications, and industry alignments to ensure sustainable attributes across its ProActive platforms, which include recyclable, compostable, and renewable solutions.

The company’s Collaboration and Innovation Centre in Ogden, New York, supports these efforts, fostering partnerships like the recent collaboration with Western Michigan University to advance fiber packaging circularity.

In February 2025, the company’s ProActive Recyclable RP-1000 Paper Platform, used for Marks & Spencer’s organic potato range, won Best in Class and an Award of Distinction at the PAC Global Awards.

“The RP-1000 balances durability and recyclability, setting a new standard for sustainable packaging,” said Abigail Sawyer-Parker, ProAmpac’s product development technologist.
