RDM Group redefines PE-coated cartonboard with Multiboard Barrier

This initiative aims to protect moisture-sensitive goods while reducing unnecessary plastic use.

ITALY – RDM Group, a leading producer of recycled cartonboard, proudly introduces Multiboard Barrier – a polyethylene (PE)-coated cartonboard engineered to meet performance demands while addressing environmental challenges.

This initiative is a response to growing pressure on brands to eliminate unnecessary plastic.

According to the RDM Group, with the right design and methods, plastic can play a role in delivering a range of sustainable products to consumers in the form of paper-based, plastic-coated cartonboards.

“At RDM Group, we believe that rethinking plastic for today’s world doesn’t mean eliminating it, but using it in a smarter, more circular way,” said Krzysztof Krajewski, RDM Group’s chief innovation and sustainability officer.

“Multiboard Barrier is a solution that integrates minimal plastic use into a fibre-based board structure, optimising both functionality and recyclability.”

RDM Group manufactured Multiboard Barrier – PE-coated cartonboard made from 100% recycled fibres.

The Multiboard Barrier is designed for high-performance applications with moisture- or grease-sensitive products, such as frozen foods, powdered products like household detergents, and pet food boxes.

The plastic component makes up just 3–5% of the overall structure, depending on the grammage, thus minimising the plastic content of high-performance packaging.

The PE layer can be used as a heat-sealable glue, giving it an advantage over non-heat-sealable alternative barrier coating solutions that require adhesive-based lamination, thus making recycling more difficult.

Multiboard Barrier is recyclable in line with the latest industry standards and methodologies.

Multiboard Barrier not only meets but also aligns with the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), instilling confidence in its compliance with industry standards.

It is a compelling choice for brands looking to future-proof their packaging, as it features a reduced plastic fraction, a low carbon footprint, and certified recyclability.

RDM Group utilises an integrated approach to boost efficiency and help to strengthen sustainability outcomes.

Additionally, as both a producer and recycler of in-house PE-coated cartonboard, it maintains oversight of the product’s entire lifecycle.

According to the company, in 2024, it made significant progress towards its long-term sustainability goal by recovering approximately 90% of plastics through recycling.

“We’re proving that even plastic-coated packaging can have a circular future,” remarked Krajewski. “Multiboard Barrier goes beyond ticking regulatory boxes. It’s pushing the boundaries of what’s possible now while we develop the next generation of sustainable materials.”

Multiboard Barrier is now available in a wide range of specifications, including both reels and sheets, as well as optional finishes, colours, and surface treatments.

This advancement enables both converters and brands to customise packaging solutions without sacrificing quality, functionality, or environmental responsibility.
