ITALY – RDM Group has made a significant announcement regarding the reopening of the Villa Santa Lucia paper mill in Italy, signaling a pivotal moment for local employment and the recycled cartonboard industry.

Following extensive negotiations with local authorities and institutions, the mill is set to resume operations on March 4th, 2024, safeguarding 163 jobs and breathing new life into the region.

The decision to reopen the Villa Santa Lucia mill comes after a period of uncertainty, marked by the initial shutdown in January 2024, which raised concerns about job losses and the broader impact on the recycled cartonboard sector.

Through collaborative efforts with the Lazio Region and other stakeholders, RDM Group has successfully navigated regulatory challenges and environmental considerations, leading to a resolution that preserves livelihoods and supports the local economy.

One of the key challenges that led to the mill’s shutdown was the treatment of wastewater into the local sewerage system.

The restart of operations hinges on the renewal of the Integrated Environmental Authorization (IEA), with ongoing discussions focused on material categorization and flow management.

RDM Group is committed to implementing recycling practices consistent with its other paper mills across Italy and Europe, ensuring environmental compliance and sustainability at the Villa Santa Lucia mill.

The reopening of the Villa Santa Lucia mill not only secures jobs but also revitalizes the recycled cartonboard industry, serving as a beacon of hope for the local community.

It underscores RDM Group’s dedication to balancing industrial activity with environmental stewardship and sets a precedent for resolving complex industrial and environmental issues through dialogue and cooperation.
