The facility has an Experience Centre which demonstrates its capabilities for visitors’ individual requirements and promotes client collaboration

IRELAND – Smurfit Westrock has launched HORIZON, a specialized packaging center near Dublin Airport focused on pharmaceutical adherence tools, regulated medication packs, and clinical trial materials.
The company invested more than US$43 million to build the site, which operates under standards similar to drug manufacturing plants with patient needs as the main priority.
The facility employs 170 experts in design, production, and support roles within the Smurfit Westrock Adherence & Clinicals division.
Staff develop packaging that improves trial success rates, encourages consistent medication use, and generates detailed performance data.
Equipment includes cold chain validation systems and electronics testing units to ensure rapid product launches for global clients.
An on-site Experience Centre showcases custom solutions and allows direct client interaction to create new healthcare applications.
This space supports joint projects that lead to practical medical improvements.
HORIZON connects with matching plants in Kunshan, China, and Mebane, North Carolina, providing unified worldwide service.
Brian Sheridan, vice president of global sales for Smurfit Westrock Adherence & Clinicals, described the center as a complete service hub for adherence and clinical needs.
He stated that advanced tools and skilled workers deliver fast results centered on patients. Sheridan added that the work at HORIZON creates real differences in treatment access.
Demand for specialized pharma packaging continues to grow across Europe. Market data shows a 12% yearly increase in clinical supply needs through 2030 due to new rules and larger trials.
Last month, Amcor opened a US$20 million facility in Ireland for recyclable trial packaging, adding to local capabilities for drug companies.
HORIZON uses fiber materials to cut plastic in trial kits and handles up to 500,000 units each month.
The site covers blister cards to tracked labels for full supply chain visibility. Early users report 30% shorter design phases compared to standard methods.
The global clinical packaging sector heads toward US$35 billion by 2028.
HORIZON meets this growth with features like senior-friendly safety caps that still block child access. Such designs help drug makers satisfy upcoming EU standards set for 2026.
Sheridan noted in a company release that team dedication drives ongoing progress. He said targeted funding allows quick adaptation to industry changes.
