MALAYSIA – Australian packaging firm TomKat Koolpack is strengthening its presence in Southeast Asia through a strategic partnership with Malaysian fresh food retailer Segi Fresh.
This collaboration is set to transform the region’s cold-chain logistics by introducing sustainable, technology-driven packaging solutions that reduce reliance on traditional materials like polystyrene and ice.
The initiative stems from an investment agreement with Mandalay Venture Partners, which aims to position TomKat’s cold-chain packaging as a leader in eco-friendly logistics.
Segi Fresh, known for its commitment to innovation in fresh food distribution, plans to incorporate TomKat’s near-field communication (NFC)-enabled thermal containers into its supply chain.
These advanced containers will enhance temperature control, extend shelf life, and lower environmental impact, aligning with the retailer’s sustainability goals.
With plans to double its retail footprint from 100 to 200 outlets by 2025, Segi Fresh is looking to modernize its operations while reducing waste.
TomKat’s technology offers a reusable, efficient alternative to conventional cooling methods, eliminating the need for single-use ice packs and foam-based insulation.
As reported by PKN Packaging News, this partnership is part of Mandalay Venture Partners’ broader effort to integrate agritech innovations into Segi Fresh’s supply chain.
The initiative also leverages Australia’s well-established food trade relationship with Malaysia, ensuring a seamless flow of fresh produce across borders.
As part of its global expansion strategy, TomKat recently relocated its manufacturing to Chon Buri, Thailand, bringing production closer to key suppliers and markets in Southeast Asia.
This move supports the company’s mission to scale operations while maintaining cost efficiency and reducing transportation emissions.
Tom Long, TomKat Koolpack co-founder, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “Our mission has always been to provide a sustainable, high-performance alternative to traditional cold-chain packaging.
“By working with Segi Fresh, we’re not only reducing waste in the supply chain but also ensuring fresher, higher-quality food reaches consumers across Malaysia and beyond.”
The partnership marks a significant step toward greener logistics in Southeast Asia, demonstrating how innovative packaging solutions can drive efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.
As demand for sustainable cold-chain solutions grows, TomKat Koolpack’s expansion is expected to set new industry standards across the region.
