UPM partners with Fazer to introduce recyclable packaging for Oat Rice Pies

FINLAND – UPM Specialty Papers and Fazer have collaborated on a groundbreaking project, introducing a novel packaging solution for Fazer’s Oat Rice Pies.

Departing from traditional plastic laminated packaging, this innovative paper-based alternative not only enhances recyclability but also maintains the high level of protection required for rice pies.

The award-winning packaging has garnered recognition in esteemed competitions such as WorldStar, ScanStar, and New Wood, and is now available in the chill food aisles of Finnish supermarkets.

This initiative aligns with both Fazer’s Sustainable Packaging Vision and UPM’s Biofore strategy, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainability.

The development of this new packaging solution represents over two years of meticulous work, ensuring that recyclability is achieved without compromising food safety or product quality.

Collaboration across the packaging value chain has been instrumental, leveraging Fazer’s expertise in food production and UPM Specialty Papers’ proficiency in specialty paper development.

Piia Soininen-Tengvall, Fazer’s Director of Packaging Development, emphasizes the successful integration of protective properties into the packaging paper itself, eliminating the need for separate plastic lamination while maintaining functionality.

This achievement underscores the commitment to reducing fossil-based materials without compromising performance.

UPM Specialty Papers’ Susanna Hyrkäs highlights the advantage of packaging papers in being recyclable within existing fiber recycling infrastructure.

With over 80% of fiber-based packaging material in Europe being recycled, the new packaging solution aligns with sustainability goals while ensuring product safety and functionality.

The Oat Rice Pies packaging is based on UPM ConfidioTM barrier paper, which is heat-sealable and designed for recyclability.

Testing reveals minimal recycling reject for the unprinted UPM Confidio paper, demonstrating its high recyclability compared to plastic-coated alternatives.

At Fazer Bakery’s Lappeenranta facility, known for its Finnish delicacies like Imatra and Vuoksi rice pies, the Oat Rice Pies are baked with care.

This collaboration between Fazer Bakery and UPM highlights the regional impact of sustainable innovation in packaging.

The development of UPM Confidio packaging paper underscores the collaborative efforts between UPM Jämsänkoski mill and the UPM Research Centre in Lappeenranta, further emphasizing the commitment to innovation and sustainability in the paper industry.
